For our RAN Youth & Education Working Group meeting, we are looking for youth workers, teachers and other educational professionals with experience in preventive work for girls in and around schools.
Practitioners who can provide concrete examples from daily practices, or who experience challenges around this topic, are invited to respond to this call for participants.
The latest issue of the ‘Spotlight’ magazine takes a look at the topic of polarisation in the context of P/CVE. The publication, includes articles from, and interviews with a number of practitioners from the RAN Practitioners network. It looks at the impact of events such as the Ukraine crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic; the challenge posed by violent left wing and right wing extremist influencing efforts; and approaches to creating a shared identity and building community resilience.

Remembrance (09/04/2022)
On 11th March 2022, the EU paid tribute to Victims/Survivors of Terrorism (VoT). The event, which takes place every year on the day of the 2004 Madrid attacks, heard the powerful testimonies of a number of victims and survivors of terrorist attacks. The event also heard from RAN practitioners who presented their efforts to support victims and survivors to overcome their trauma and play a role in P/CVE. The Remembrance Day was organised by the European Commission, in close cooperation with the RAN Victims/Survivors of Terrorism Working Group.

A new paper provides an overview of a study visit to France in December 2021, which gave participants the chance to learn about France’s policy to fight radicalisation in and outside of prison, and engage in discussions with both the prison officials and the practitioners who engage with radicalised and terrorist offenders on a daily basis.

This Special Edition of the RAN Practitioners Update therefore takes a look at the significance of the day, shines a spotlight on victims and their role in P/CVE and showcases some of the work being done to support them. The Memorial Centre for Victims of Terrorism (Centro Memorial de las Víctimas del Terrorismo) in Vitoria-Gasteiz (Spain) consists of a museum to commemorate Spain’s victims/survivors of terrorism and an archive with an educational purpose. The Centre is built on four pillars: truth, memory, dignity and justice, aiming to pay tribute to those who have been affected by terror attacks and to educate the public on the consequences of extremism. A paper, published by RAN Practitioners in June 2021, provides insights for practitioners, including youth workers, educational professionals, social workers and psychologists, on how to support young victims/survivors of terrorism in making their voices heard. The paper provides an overview of how best to support young victims/survivors wanting to play a role in P/CVE and how to provide tailored support in their healing process that addresses the diversity of challenges young people face.

The RAN PRISONS Working Group is currently looking for participants with relevant expertise to take part in a meeting on ‘Multi-agency cooperation in dealing with imprisoned female returnees and protecting children’s rights’. It will build on the RAN Prisons WG meeting on ‘Practitioners’ questions and needs for the future, based on experiences in dealing with Foreign Terrorist Fighters and Violent Extremist or Terrorist Offenders’, held in June 2021.
