RAN FC&S meeting – Preventing polarisation on a community level: how to bring together communities? (04/10/2022)
Tuesday 04 October and Wednesday 05 October 2022 (lunch-to-lunch meeting). This meeting will take place in Stockholm, Sweden.
For this RAN meeting of the Families, Communities & Social Care Working Group, we are looking for practitioners who are working on initiatives aimed at bringing communities together, initiatives focused on community dialogue and/or the prevention of polarisation. This includes local coordinators, community representatives, religious leaders, social workers, youth workers, or practitioners working for organisations specialised in community dialogue or mapping of polarising tendencies.

RAN Mental Health - The changing frameworks of (extremist) ideologies – implications for mental health practitioners (26/09/2022)
This meeting will take place in Rome on Monday 26 and Tuesday 27 September 2022, lunch-to-lunch.
We are currently looking for suitable participants for the RAN Mental Health Working Group meeting on “The changing frameworks of (extremist) ideologies – implications for mental health practitioners”.
With the summer here, we take a look back at some of the work been done by RAN Practitioners and its members so far this year. While the COVID-19 pandemic might not yet be a thing of the past, the relaxation in measures has enabled practitioners to meet once again in person at various Working Group meetings and events. We have been out and about, meeting with some of these practitioners both at RAN events and at their places of work. In this issue of the RAN Practitioners Update, we travel to Athens, to meet with members of the RAN YOUNG platform and we travel to Vilnius to meet with an organisation on the frontline in tackling disinformation and conspiracy narratives.

The RAN YOUNG Platform is a network of young people working to prevent and counter violent extremism (P/CVE). The aim of the platform is to give young people a voice in P/CVE and empower them to take action in their communities or field of work. To do this, the RAN YOUNG Platform offers young actors a safe space to exchange views and formulate recommendations both for first-line practitioners and policymakers. For the first time in two years, members of the RAN YOUNG Platform had an opportunity to meet in person, to discuss the role of young people in P/CVE. We travelled to Athens to participate in this RAN YOUNG event and meet with some of its participants.

In March of this year, the RAN YOUNG Platform organised its third ‘Review Panel’. Through an online workshop, 16 young people reviewed three projects from the RAN Practitioners’ Collection of Inspiring Practices. The purpose of the Review Panel was to provide a young person’s perspective that might inform and help in the future delivery of these projects.

A paper, published by RAN Practitioners in January 2022, takes a look at the current state of, and future outlook for conspiracy narratives in the EU. This paper captures some of the insights gathered from a RAN Practitioners Communication & Narratives Working Group meeting. It makes a series of recommendations for practitioners in tackling the challenge and suggests a set of follow-ups for future RAN Practitioners activity.

In December of last year, we published a RAN Practitioners Spotlight on ‘Conspiracy narratives and disinformation’. This e-magazine, heard from a number of practitioners and experts about different aspects of the challenge, including: the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic; the nexus between disinformation and violent extremism; the role of conspiracy narratives in violent right wing extremism (VRWE); effective counter measures, and much more.

The role of civil society organisations in exit work (18/07/2022)
A recent paper by RAN Practitioners provides a comprehensive overview of the different functions and characteristics of CSO-led exit interventions in the EU. The paper reviews areas and forms of cooperation between CSOs and state agencies in exit work, and summarises the challenges, lessons learned and inspiring practices regarding cooperation with state actors.

Developing resilience as an approach to dealing with the influences of problematic informal and non-formal education in schools (18/07/2022)
A RAN Practitioners handbook provides information on how adolescents develop socially and how problematic education can influence them. The handbook presents requirements that must be met by cooperation partners and outlines three approaches which have been successfully used in schools throughout Europe. The methods included can also be used by teachers to address difficult topics within the classroom.

RAN Practitioners is organising a Thematic Event on ‘Current challenges and solutions related to working with youth on P/CVE’. Practitioners from different professional fields who work with youth on P/CVE related topics are invited to participate in this event. Specifically, practitioners from RAN Youth & Education, RAN Families, Communities & Social Care, RAN Mental Health, RAN Communication & Narratives, RAN Prison and RAN Rehab are welcomed to register.
The recent shooting at a supermarket in Buffalo in the US, which left ten people dead, demonstrates the increasing danger posed by online radicalisation. The shooting follows similar style attacks from violent right wing extremists (VRWE), such as Pittsburgh, Christchurch and Halle. The shooting reinforces the need to continue to update our understanding of the digital ecosystem, the behaviour of young people online, the innovations in digital technology, and the exploitation of the internet by terrorists and violent extremists. In this issue of the RAN Practitioners Update, we revisit what we know about the digital environment. We also take a look at events closer to home – at how the war in Ukraine might be impacting the P/CVE environment – through the latest edition of the RAN Spotlight magazine.

A paper, produced by RAN Practitioners in October 2021, ‘Lone Actors in Digital Environments’, provides an overview of digital environments that facilitate the development of lone actors. The paper concludes that online structures and subcultural milieus could be equally important for inspiring violence as connections to groups in the physical world. It suggests that in order to understand this emerging trend, it is important to recognise the online communities that VRWE use to produce a sense of belonging, spread dehumanising propaganda and promote acts of violence.

Published in March 2022, a ‘Spotlight’ magazine takes a look at the digital ecosystem. The publication looks at the role of technology in P/CVE, detecting manipulated images, and digital grooming tactics deployed by terrorists and extremists.
It also features insights from practitioners on improving the digital literacy of both young people and adults and building their resilience to disinformation, fake news and conspiracy narratives.

A recent paper provides insights for practitioners – including local authorities, social workers, prison officers, police officers and practitioners working in refugee/asylum seeker facilities – on the dissemination of extremist ideology and radicalisation within unofficial prayer rooms. The paper offers recommendations for how to detect these activities and how to deal with the phenomenon. The paper outlines some relevant practices and provides suggestions for further reading.

RAN Practitioners is providing a new resource for practitioners. Understanding that practitioners are busy with their daily work and not always able to participate in Working Group meetings and events, RAN Practitioners has produced a series of e-Learning training modules which can be accessed online. All e-Learning modules can be accessed on the website of the EU Academy for free here. Once registered you will be able to immediately start any available courses. After completing you will receive an automated certificate.
Radicalisation and polarisation (20/06/2022)
The first e-Leanring module is a training for teachers and school staff on managing radicalisation and polarisation in schools, ‘Gérer La Radicalisation Et La Polarisation à l'école’. An English version is soon to follow. The training deals with questions such as “What is normal behaviour for teenagers and what is potentially worrying?” and “How to identify polarisation?”. The training – which was developed by Karen Heremans and Michelle Hassen, both experienced education experts and former chairs of the RAN Education Working Group – points to case studies and tools that can be used in the classroom.
