Align webinar to help energy companies measure and manage their impact on biodiversity (03/03/2022)
As part of the project ‘Aligning Accounting Approaches for Nature’ (Align), a fourth webinar will take place on Tuesday, 8 March 2022 from 14-16h CET / 13-15h BST focusing on the energy sector.
The objective of the webinar is to help companies in the energy sector measure and manage their impact on biodiversity. Corporate practitioners and relevant stakeholders - including BP, Tata Power, Repsol, and Flora & Fauna International - will discuss the biodiversity impact methods and metrics they find most useful and exchange best practices on how to embed these into business decision-making.
EBNS 2021: Businesses recognise the urgency to act and mobilise for the ecological transition (21/12/2021)
On 30 Nov – 1 Dec 2021, the EU Business@Biodiversity Platform, together with Entreprises pour l’Environnement, Biodiversity in Good Company and the Value Balancing Alliance, hosted the 2021 edition of the European Business Nature Summit. The Summit capitalised on the momentum from this year’s busy climate and environment agenda, and gathered 86 speakers and more than 1000 participant representing businesses of all sizes, financial institutions, NGOs, biodiversity experts, and national and EU level policy-makers.
New online course on “Valuing nature and people to inform business decision-making” (21/12/2021)
The Capitals Coalition and the We Value Nature campaign have developed a new online course on “Valuing nature and people to inform business decision-making” to be launched in early 2022. The training will be delivered on the Coursera platform, and will feature videos, interactive exercises, quizzes and discussion prompts.
One year after the launch of Align: Key achievements and next steps (21/12/2021)
The Align project – Aligning accounting approaches for nature – is reaching the end of its first year. The official launch and recruitment webinar organised in early 2021 raised interest among more than 500 organisations. Today the Align community includes more than 600 members. Within this, more than 200 business practitioners and technical experts have engaged in developing recommendations for a standard on corporate biodiversity measurement and valuation. Business Statement at EBNS 2021 (23/11/2021)
Under the leadership of Jean-Laurent Bonnafé, Chairman of EpE and CEO of BNP Paribas, and the Partners of the European Business Statement, CEOs are cordially invited to the “CEO-only” session at the EBNS 2021 to discuss a “European Business Statement.” A draft statement has been prepared by the EBNS 2021 partners, and it will be delivered formally to the EU Commission on 1 December in the presence of Virginijus Sinkevičius, European Commissioner for the Environment and Laurent Burelle, AFEP Chairman. The EBNS partners aim for this statement to be ambitious and grounded in business reality, and therefore, CEOs are invited to this session to review and discuss the statement before it is formally delivered.

Results of the Finance@Biodiversity Community's Workshops on Engagement with Companies (23/11/2021)
In 2021, the Finance@Biodiversity Community has focused its collective learning and experience sharing on the subject of ‘Engagement with companies’. This covers both the engagement of investors with publicly listed companies, and the engagement of banks with their clients. The F@B Community developed four workshops together with its members, in response to their needs, and it is now developing a guidance paper based on the workshops. The preliminary results are already available in the official minutes for each session.

The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) seeks experts to participate in the external review of the draft scoping report for the IPBES business and biodiversity assessment. Governments, interested and qualified experts, including scientists, decision makers, practitioners and other knowledge holders can participate in the external review of the draft scoping report for the business and biodiversity assessment. The external review will be open until 15 December 2021.
Business for Nature policy consultation - Deadline extended until 26 November (23/11/2021)
Business for Nature invites businesses from all sectors, geographies, and of all sizes to respond to a policy consultation and share their views on: 1) Reducing negative direct impacts; 2) The role to be played by SMEs; 3) Addressing environmentally harmful subsidies; 4) Mechanisms to incentivize sustainable use and penalise negative impacts; and 5) Legislation on deforestation and conversion free supply chains.

This webinar series provides an overview of recent developments in the field of biodiversity data for businesses and financial institutions. The three first webinars present examples of currently available and well-performing data sources on biodiversity impacts and dependencies, as well as innovative and promising biodiversity data collection techniques. Each of the webinars includes concrete examples on how businesses have applied biodiversity data. The final webinar focuses on remaining challenges and invites businesses to participate in a debate on how the accessibility, infrastructure and quality of data can be improved.

Launch of the Extractive Sector Species Protection Code of Conduct (26/10/2021)
On 28 October 2021, BirdLife International and the EU Business@Biodiversity Platform, in cooperation with HeidelbergCement AG, will launch the Extractive Sector Species Protection Code of Conduct. Seeking to build on the provisions of the EU’s Birds and Habitats Directives, and without conflicting with EU law, the Code of Conduct demonstrates the Extraction Sector’s commitment to conserving nature through the implementation and management of temporary habitats. Join the live launch event with representation by the signatory associations and endorsement of the European Commission.
The Transparent Project seeks companies to pilot its methodology (26/10/2021)
The Transparent project is developing a standardized natural capital accounting and valuation methodology that provides decision-makers with the information to generate long-term value and to improve business resilience and an overview of impacts and dependencies of businesses on the environment, communities and society. The project is now looking for businesses to pilot the methodology.
Piloting businesses will be supported by the Transparent team and will gain insights into their impacts and dependencies on natural capital and how this information can inform decision-making processes.
New quarterly update of the Guide on Biodiversity Measurement Approaches (26/10/2021)
The Finance and Biodiversity Community (F@B Community) and workstream Methods, both part of the EU Business@Biodiversity Platform, and the Finance for Biodiversity Foundation have prepared the next quarterly update of the "Finance for Biodiversity: Guide on biodiversity measurement approaches." The guide provides a comprehensive overview of the six tools for measuring biodiversity currently in use by financial institutions: CBF, BFFI, STAR, GBSFI, BIA and ENCORE.

Th EU Business@Biodiversity Platform will host a webinar series in October exploring different aspects of biodiversity data.
Despite the huge demand from businesses and finance institutions for more clarity on biodiversity data that are suitable for use in a business context, relatively limited guidance is available.
The first webinar on 12 October will focus on IBAT and ENCORE, two key biodiversity data sources for screening purposes.
