Last week, CINEA witnessed the BURDI project’s first unmanned aircraft systems flight demonstration in the Port of Antwerp. The project is showing the value chain of the pre-U-space airspace management process. BURDI has been chosen as a Digital Sky Demonstrator under the first CEF Transport call to bring SESAR research outcomes (mostly under the Horizon programme) closer to industrialisation and deployment. SESAR 3 JU and CINEA work together on projects that demonstrate solutions in operational environments prior to full deployment. See also: X
Finnish enterprise AW-Energy has successfully developed WaveRoller, a technology that converts ocean wave energy to electricity. The machine operates in near-shore areas (approximately 0.3-2 km from the shore) at depths of between 8 and 20 meters. Depending on tidal conditions it is mostly or fully submerged and anchored to the seabed.
Over 70 Horizon Transport research projects took part in the annual flagship event for Road Transport Research results (RTR) held in Brussels on 5-7 February 2024. The event provided a forum for projects to engage with policymakers and share their ideas, methodologies, and results. CINEA was well represented with CINEA Director, Paloma Aba Garrote speaking at the opening session and other colleagues moderating many sessions or managing the joint EC stand.
CINEA has become officially EMAS certified! The certificate recognises the Agency as an active agent of the EMAS's environmental analysis, contributing also to broader sustainability goals. The conclusions of this analysis will be shared through a European Commission Environmental Statement, highlighting our environmental performance, policies, objectives, and improvement actions.
The Green Team is hosting a clothing swap party at CINEA – sort out your wardrobe and be part of it! You can bring as many items as you wish that you will be able to exchange for an equal number of items. Join us during lunch time in W910 00/41, between 19-22 February.
With more than 650 events across Europe, World Wetlands Day is one of the biggest celebrations of nature in the calendar - and two current LIFE projects are making a splash!
In our series of short ‘Meet your colleagues’ interviews, we met with Roza de Jong this week, LIFE programme Community Manager in Unit A1 ‘Programme Support, Coordination & Communication’. Let us know if you would like to be next!
EHPA data shows that the sale of heat pumps has shrunk over 2023, putting decarbonisation targets at risk.
Hosted by BUILD UP and organised by the Architects Council of Europe (ACE), this webinar aimed to inform the trainees about the ARISE e-learning platform, which provides gamified micro-learning modules on BIM and applied energy efficiency tools.
The SolarCity is a web-based simulator application to evaluate the generation of electricity using rooftop-mounted solar photovoltaic (PV) systems.
The main objectives of this renovation were to obtain a Nearly Zero renovation label and reuse demolition products and bio-sourced materials.
A joint study conducted by energy monitoring experts, including Build Test Solutions, Veritherm, and Elmhurst Energy, suggests that around 70% of homes with heat pumps have the wrong size installed.
Fossil fuel boilers are set to be fully phased out by 2040, with subsidies cut from 2025, as part of the recent political agreement between EU legislators.
BUILD UP engages in a conversation about heat pumps with the Secretary General of the European Heating Industry, exploring aspects like the EU regulatory framework, benefits for homeowners, and their significance in meeting sustainable targets.

Head of EU Affairs at the European Heat Pump Association (EHPA), Vanbecelaere delves into the status of heat pump installations in EU buildings and explains how the recast of the EPBD, RED and EED addresses issues around heating systems in buildings.
BlueHeart Energy (BHE) is a deep tech start-up and has developed a revolutionary thermoacoustic (TA) heat pump engine. This next generation of heat pump technology provides an alternative for vapour compression techniques and better meets the requirements of existing buildings that are not well met by today's technologies. BHE's TA engine will be supplied business to business to heat pump manufacturers in Europe and beyond.
As the European Union strives to improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions, heat pumps have emerged as key players in decarbonising our buildings. These technologies exploit renewable energy sources, offering a cleaner and more sustainable alternative to traditional heating systems. This article provides an overview on EU policies, financial instruments, and EU-funded projects to facilitate the adoption of heat pumps in buildings and to overcome the current barriers.
LIFE projects are leading the way in creating solutions to reduce our environmental footprint, from cheese production to forestry, leather and shoes. At the beginning of this month, 13 LIFE and 8 non-LIFE projects participated in a Networking Meeting to discuss best practices and challenges related to the PEF method.
