Starting in January 2024, Moldova has taken up the Coordination of the Common Maritime Agenda for the Black Sea, in line with the initiative’s principle of yearly rotating country coordination. Moldova has taken over this role from Romania, which successfully coordinated the CMA in 2023.

In support of one of the CMA priority on “sustainable fisheries and aquaculture in the Black Sea” (Goal I ‘Healthy marine and coastal ecosystems), the CMA participating countries decided to establish a technical group under the topic of “Sustainable Aquaculture”.The Kick-off meeting took place last year in Bucharest. In April, the EU Policy Lab (Joint Research Centre, European Commission) will collect citizens' and stakeholders' real-life experiences in relation to water, in all its aspects. They will share a weblink with you and highly encourage you to participate in this 15-min innovative survey, via the European MSP Platform. This will help gather insights from all 27 member states and a variety of stakeholders on the way which water matters most to them. The text analysis of the stories will inform an awareness campaign by DG Environment and the policymakers of the next Commission more generally.

26 January was the UN International Day of Clean Energy, which focuses on how clean power impacts economics, human health, education and social justice. On that occasion, the LIFE programme celebrated its Clean Energy Transition projects supporting and driving a clean and just transition.
Over 70 projects funded by the Horizon transport research programme took to the stage at the annual flagship event for Road Transport Research results (RTR) held in Brussels on 5-7 February 2024. The Commission just presented its assessment for a 2040 climate target for the EU. It recommends reducing the EU’s net greenhouse gas emissions by 90% by 2040 relative to 1990. The 2040 climate target reaffirms the EU’s determination to tackle climate change and shapes our path after 2030, to ensure the EU reaches climate neutrality by 2050.

A call for a new series of internal videos called ‘FOCUS ON’ is now launched! Record a short and engaging video (2-5 minutes) focusing on various topics of interest.
To celebrate CEF’s tenth birthday, the Agency will launch various communication activities during 2024. The aim is to show how this funding instrument has been fundamental in modernising European infrastructure for transport and energy, and highlight the programme’s various achievements in these sectors.
In Iceland, east of Reykjavik, a geothermal powerplant can be spotted in the rugged landscape. It has the ambition to become the first in the world with a near-zero carbon footprint by integrating CO² capture, injection, and mineral storage. The Silverstone project uses Carbfix, a mineralisation technology which turns captured CO² into stone in less than two years underground.
The call for ‘Young Energy Ambassadors’ is open to people between 18 and 34 years old, living in the EU or the EEA. Their activities should involve advancing the clean energy transition or contributing to tackling specific challenges in the sustainable energy field. Following the successful creation of the first cohort in 2023, the call aims to set up a new group of 30 young professionals, from different sectors/career stages, acting as multipliers for the European Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW).
