Migration and asylum topics are constantly in the public eye, and having trustworthy statistics and information is imperative. The migration and asylum in Europe – 2023 interactive publication is your go-to source on these topics, answering many questions about migration in the EU and more.

Did you know that in 2021, 2.3 million immigrants came to the EU from non-EU countries and about 1.1 million people emigrated outside the EU? Or that in the same year, 1.4 million people moved from one EU country to another? Or even that in 2022 Luxembourg topped the list of countries with the highest share of non-nationals in their population (47%)? And also that, in 2022, 875 000 people applied for international protection in EU countries for the first time, a 63% increase compared with 2021?

One of the strengths of this interactive publication is the fact that it covers particular topics, such as the skills of migrants. As 2023-2024 is the European Year of Skills, we invite you to explore the various types of authorisations that allow non-EU citizens to reside in  EU countries for study and work, making full use of their skills and talent.

For example, in 2022, around 82 000 highly qualified non-EU workers received an EU Blue Card, a work and residence permit for highly qualified people from outside the EU. In the same year, EU countries also issued 421 000 authorisations to non-EU citizens for study and research.

The publication, which includes dynamic visualisations and short texts, is divided into four main sections: population diversity, protection and asylum, irregular migration and returns and skills of migrants.

Today, we are also launching the migrant integration and inclusion dashboard. This interactive visualisation tool offers a comprehensive overview of data related to demography, labour market, education, social inclusion, housing, health, and active citizenship of the migrant population in the EU.
