László Andor, the new EU Commissioner responsible for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion attended the opening conference of the 2010 European Year in Paris.
The opening conference marked the Commissioner’s first visit to a Member State in his new functions. He thanked the people who had contributed to setting up the 600 projects and activities that will take place in France throughout 2010, saying that “these will be essential in raising awareness on poverty and social exclusion”.
He emphasised his dedication to the fight against poverty and social exclusion, and his expectations for the campaign: “The activities under European Year could complement and reinforce our readiness to fight against poverty.”
To make the campaign a success everyone has to work together, be they grass-roots organisations, or European Commissioners, it is only through cooperation and coordination that “a renewed commitment from the Union’s heads of State or Government at the end of this year (will)… help to launch a new phase in the building of a social Europe.”
