Once-Only Technical System applies for Digital Commission Awards

2 October 2024 | 2 minutes read

In June 2024, the European Commission launched the first edition of the Digital Commission Awards. Organised by the Directorate-General for Digital Services (DIGIT), these awards reward outstanding digital projects and initiatives for the digital transformation of the Commission’s departments. Application is possible in three categories and three additional “special awards”. The Once-Only Technical System has been submitted in the following categories:

  • Digital-ready policymaking: This category rewards efforts made by departments in implementing digital-ready policies by relying on multidisciplinary teams to properly consider digital aspects – such as user-centricity, data reuse and IT systems – from the beginning of policy design.
  • “Special award” from the Jury: Team that best demonstrates a multidisciplinary approach in digital-ready policymaking: This award recognises teams whose members specialise in various fields, bringing their domain expertise, unique perspectives, and skills to bridge the policy-IT divide during policy design.

The Once-Only Technical System securely connects the authentic sources of EU public authorities. With this system, authorities can exchange official documents and data at the request of citizens and businesses as part of cross-border administrative procedures, for example when registering an address or vehicle or when moving abroad. Thereby, the Once-Only Technical System reduces administrative burden and the cost of mobility in the Single market, while imposing no additional obligations on citizens and businesses.

The Once-Only Technical System is a truly cross-organisational initiative bringing together multidisciplinary teams from various Commission departments, Member States, cross-border organisations, and the systems’ end-users. As such, it is a powerful example of the principle of digital partnership as described in the European Commission Digital Strategy(opens in a new tab).

The winners of the awards will be selected by a jury consisting of senior Members from different Commission departments, supported by a group of experts. The award ceremony will take place in the context of the DIGITal Now event in late 2024.

News on the awards will be shared alongside other exciting news and success stories(opens in a new tab) on the Once-Only hub(opens in a new tab) and in our newsletter(opens in a new tab).
