Transforming the Single Market with the Single Digital Gateway & Once-Only Technical System, key achievements and lessons learned
Interoperability of public services, reduction of administrative burdens, focus on implementation
09:30 - 10:15
The Single Digital Gateway, accessible via the Your Europe portal, was launched in 2020 with the aim to help businesses and citizens navigate the Single Market and reap the opportunities it offers:
- Let’s take stock and see what the Single Digital Gateway brings for users, businesses and citizens, active in the Single Market, what it means for a more effective Single Market, and how we can improve the current pillars of the Single Digital Gateway.
- How the Single Digital Gateway can deliver more in 2024 and make the Once Only principle a reality for users, following the establishment of the Technical System for the automated exchange of evidence in December 2023.
10:15 - 10:45
10:45 - 11:30
The Single Digital Gateway- including its public interface Your Europe, and the Once Only Technical System- is a major eGov initiative that contributes to a better functioning of the Single Market. It is no longer possible to manage or benefit from the Single Market without digital tools. As such, the SDG complements and can be complemented by other cross-cutting and sector-specific digital tools dealing with the Single Market, both existing, such as IMI (Internal Market Information tool), the building blocks such as eDelivery, Core Vocs, eID and eSignature, eProcurement tools (eCertis, the European single procurement document (ESPD) and the Public Procurement Data Space, PPDS), and upcoming, such as the EUDI Wallet. Appropriate bridges and synergies or closer relations could improve interoperability between these tools, for a more efficient Single Market.
- Which bridges and synergies could be built with internal market digital tools relevant for the Single Market and which added value these synergies could bring for users and for public administrations?
- What these bridges could look like and what these synergies would require having them implemented?
11:30 - 12:15
The Single Market is the greatest asset of the EU and is expected to deliver more on many challenges, such as resilience of the industry and economy in an increasing unstable international trading environment and the twin transitions. There is also a paradigm shift emerging as businesses and citizens call for a more convenient administrative environment and fewer or simplified reporting obligations. Beyond 2024, the Single Digital Gateway will have a major role to play in making the Single Market even more accessible and competitive, based on the eGov and technological evolutions of the future.
- What could be the future potential of a Single Digital Gateway 2.0 -, its objectives, its use cases, its scope, its impact, in light of the evolutions of digital public services?
- What the features of a Single Digital Gateway 2.0 could be to meet new needs and how it could embrace technological evolutions, such as Artificial intelligence, blockchain…?
12:15 - 12:30

The Single Digital Gateway Regulation (SDGR)
In 2018, the Single Digital Gateway Regulation set out to make it easier to find the right information online to do business or move, study, work, retire or in another EU country – using the Your Europe portal.
A joint effort from the European Commission and the Member States
The Single Digital Gateway initiative called for EU Member States to ensure that a range of important cross-border administrative procedures are provided fully online. It also called on the Commission and Member States to establish a system allowing for the automated and cross-border exchange of evidence (the documents or data needed for these procedures), known as the Once-Only Technical System.
Complementing the Your Europe portal
Alongside the Your Europe portal, the Once-Only Technical System stands as the newest element within the framework of the Single Digital Gateway, dedicated to more efficient public services and the simplification of administrative procedures.
The Once-Only hub: Boosting the EU Single Market
The Once-Only Technical System lets EU public authorities securely exchange official documents and data at the request of citizens and businesses as part of cross-border administrative procedures, e.g., when registering an address or vehicle when moving abroad. This innovative system eliminates the complicated manual search, mapping, and fetching of data between Member State authorities, improving efficiency, making people's lives easier, and reducing the costs of mobility in the Single Market.
