Contact Group publishes report on synergies between the Once-Only Technical System and EU Digital Identity Wallet

On 4 March 2024, the OOTS-EUDI Wallet Contact Group published the report “Synergies between the Once-Only Technical System and the EUDI Wallet.”

This report provides expert-driven insights into how two central EU digital policy initiatives can reinforce and benefit from each other. This report concerns:

• The Once-Only Technical System, live since December 2023, as foreseen in the Single Digital Gateway Regulation. This technical system addresses the fact that cross-border administrative procedures are often costly, complicated and time consuming because of the number of pieces of evidence that citizens and businesses need to provide to prove their age, nationality, qualification status or level of education, etc. Thanks to Once-Only, citizens and businesses will no longer need to search, download, and upload their data repeatedly. They will now have the option to ask the relevant eGovernment Portal – connected to the Once-Only system – to do it for them automatically and directly from the appropriate official register. This is done following the explicit request for its use given that the use of Once-Only is optional. This applies when registering an address or vehicle when moving abroad or opening a business and many other administrative procedures.
• The EU Digital Identity Wallet, which will enable citizens and businesses to store identity data, credentials associated to their identity and other data issued by trusted sources in a secure wallet application. In addition, the EU Digital Identity Wallet will allow citizens and businesses to provide their data to relying parties on request or to use it for online and offline authentication and for the provision of data to digital services.

This Contact Group includes experts from the eIDAS expert group and experts on the digitisation of administrative procedures from the Single Digital Gateway Expert Group, responsible for overseeing the implementation of the Once-Only Technical System.
