Dacian Cioloş meets former EU Agriculture Commissioners

EU Agriculture Commissioner Dacian Cioloș took a journey back into the history and traditions of the EU's Common Agriculture Policy today in a meeting with three of his predecessors in the job.
While he enjoyed a close working relationship with his immediate predecessor Mariann Fischer Boel and witnessed her at work, the Commissioner had an equally interesting talk with Frans Andriessen (Commissioner from 1985-1989) and Ray Mac Sharry (1989-1993) whose 1992 reform is seen as one of the key turning points in modernising the Common Agriculture Policy.

The Management Committee for Direct Payments backed unanimously Commission proposals to allow 10 Member States to pay to farmers up to 50% of direct payments for 2010 from 16 October onwards instead of from 1 December 2010.

A l'occasion d'une audition publique sur la révision de la directive sur les instruments de marchés financiers (MiFID), le Commissaire Dacian Cioloş a exprimé sa préoccupation en ce qui concerne l'impact sur l'agriculture de la spéculation excessive sur les marchés financiers.
"Nous devons prendre des mesures contre l'extrême volatilité des prix des produits agricoles", a-t-il indiqué, soulignant que la spéculation ne doit pas mettre en danger l'existence d'exploitations agricoles parfaitement viables en temps normal.
Demandant plus de transparence sur les marchés financiers et plus de supervision sur les produits dérivés, le Commissaire Cioloş a indiqué que la future Politique agricole commune devrait inclure des éléments nouveaux pour lutter contre la volatilité des prix et la chute des revenus agricoles.
Commission adopts amended proposal for the food programme for the most deprived persons in the European Union

The European Commission today adopted an amended proposal to improve the current food distribution programme for the most deprived persons in the European Union. It builds on a 2008 proposal allowing the scheme to use market purchases on a permanent basis, to complement available intervention stocks.
