Dacian Cioloş meets former EU Agriculture Commissioners

EU Agriculture Commissioner Dacian Cioloș took a journey back into the history and traditions of the EU's Common Agriculture Policy today in a meeting with three of his predecessors in the job.
While he enjoyed a close working relationship with his immediate predecessor Mariann Fischer Boel and witnessed her at work, the Commissioner had an equally interesting talk with Frans Andriessen (Commissioner from 1985-1989) and Ray Mac Sharry (1989-1993) whose 1992 reform is seen as one of the key turning points in modernising the Common Agriculture Policy.

Ten Member States allowed to advance direct payments to farmers

The Management Committee for Direct Payments backed unanimously Commission proposals to allow 10 Member States to pay to farmers up to 50% of direct payments for 2010 from 16 October onwards instead of from 1 December 2010.

Participating at the public hearing on the review of the Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (MiFID), Commissioner Dacian Cioloş expressed his concern about the impact on agriculture of excessive speculation on financial markets.
"We have to take measures against the extreme volatility of prices of agricultural products", stated the Commissioner, underlining that speculation should not put in danger farms otherwise perfectly viable in normal times.
Commission adopts amended proposal for the food programme for the most deprived persons in the European Union

The European Commission today adopted an amended proposal to improve the current food distribution programme for the most deprived persons in the European Union. It builds on a 2008 proposal allowing the scheme to use market purchases on a permanent basis, to complement available intervention stocks.
Increase in the EU support for the beekeeping sector
