Commissioner Cioloş: "We have to put an end to the hyper-speculation with agricultural products"

Commissioner Cioloş: "We have to put an end to the hyper-speculation with agricultural products"

Participating at the public hearing on the review of the Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (MiFID), Commissioner Dacian Cioloş expressed his concern about the impact on agriculture  of excessive speculation on financial markets.

"We have to take measures against the extreme volatility of prices of agricultural products", stated the Commissioner, underlining that speculation should not put in danger farms otherwise perfectly viable in normal times.

Asking for more transparency of the financial markets and more supervision for the derivatives markets, Commissioner Cioloş stated that the future reform of the Common Agriculture Policy will include more elements to fight the volatility of prices and the decrease in farmers' incomes.
