The European Commission has adopted an updated action plan for a sustainable, resilient and competitive blue economy in the EU Atlantic area, covering France, Ireland, Portugal and Spain.
The European Commission is organising a series of workshops on the future of the Atlantic maritime strategy, and in particular the revision of the Atlantic action plan. The workshops are set up in cooperation with the five Atlantic Member States: France, Ireland, Portugal, Spain and the UK.
The EU's 2013-2020 Atlantic Action Plan has spurred over 1200 new maritime projects and nearly 6 billion euro of investments so far, according to an independent consultant tasked by the EU to take stock of the initiative at mid-term. Most of the projects target environmental protection and innovation, as well as improved connectivity and social inclusion.
The newest pillar in the EU's renewable energy agenda was celebrated on 8 November at the University of Strathclyde, Technology and Innovation Centre in Glasgow. Investment in further blue skills developments, such as preservation of tourist attractions and marine cultural heritage were discussed. As well as celebrating the technological advances, the stakeholders looked at ways to guarantee that development is socially inclusive and sustainable development.
Is EU action still necessary to stimulate Blue Growth in the Atlantic Ocean? The European Commission invites stakeholders to provide their input to this and other questions to support its mid-term review of the Atlantic action plan.
The annual Atlantic Stakeholder Platform Conference (ASPC) offers a great transnational publicity opportunity to deliver the Atlantic Action Plan (AAP) key messages and further promote awareness of its achievements. The annual conference is the central hub for stakeholders of the Atlantic Strategy to meet, seek ways of cooperation, share information and identify funding opportunities and partnerships for their projects.
Commissioner Karmenu Vella participated in the 3rd Atlantic Stakeholder Platform Conference in Dublin, following the successful editions in Porto and Brest last year. The Commissioner reaffirmed his commitment to strengthen cooperation in the Atlantic. He expressed his appreciation for the progress made by the maritime stakeholders in the region. He also chaired the first edition of the "Atlantic project awards", rewarding the five most innovative and successful projects.
