Commissioner visits Florence 'Youth on the Move' event

An estimated 20 000 people visited the Youth on the Move tent set up on Florence's Piazza della Signoria for the Festival dell'Europa on 6-10 May 2011. The varied programme, highlighting projects financed through the Lifelong Learning and Youth in Action EU programmes, attracted a mixed crowd of interested young people, tourists and passers-by.

Commissioner launches 'European Opera Days'

At the official launch, Commissioner Vassiliou explained that this year's European Opera Days (7-8 May) would focus on young people and recalled how she had become hooked on opera in her student days.
During the European Opera Days, opera houses throughout Europe will stage special events aimed at attracting children and families to opera. More than 100 opera houses in 23 countries will participate in total.

23 May - Commissioner Vassiliou held a reading event at a primary school in Nicosia, Cyprus, as part of her EU-wide literacy campaign, which she launched in February. It was the fourth such event, aimed at promoting the importance of being able to read and understand all kinds of texts – whether written or digital, literature or newspapers. Following similar events held in Budapest, Pecs, and Florence, the Commissioner focused this time on 'Literacy for Citizenship'.
