EURO 2012: Androulla Vassiliou, European Commissioner responsible for sport, sends message to fans and teams

On the eve of the opening of the EURO 2012, Androulla Vassiliou, the European Commissioner responsible for sport, has sent this message to football fans and the teams competing in the tournament, "This is the moment that millions of football fans all over Europe have been waiting for. Many thousands of supporters will be in Poland and Ukraine to cheer on their teams.

Team Culture: Launch of new initiative to highlight contribution of culture to jobs and economic recovery

The role of culture at a time of crisis is the focus of a new initiative, Androulla Vassiliou and Uffe Elbæk, the Danish Minister for Culture, are taking part in a launch event in Brussels tomorrow (6 June) to highlight the impact of culture on jobs, growth, innovation and creativity.
"Culture is part of the solution to the challenges we face in getting Europe back on track. The cultural and creative sectors employ 8.5 million people and account for up to 4.5% of EU GDP."

Commissioner Vassiliou visits Guimarães (Portugal) European Capital of Culture 2012

On 2-3 June, Androulla Vassiliou will visit Guimarães (Portugal), this year's European Capital of Culture with Maribor (Slovenia). The Commissioner will be officially welcomed to the city by mayor António Magalhães and the President of the Guimarães Foundation, João Serra.
