Umeå (Sweden): 'City of Winter' promises a warm welcome as it launches year as European Capital of Culture

Guests from across Europe and beyond will join the people of Umeå in Sweden as the city launches its year as 2014 European Capital of Culture this weekend, with festivities taking place day and night. The opening 'Burning Snow' ceremony on Saturday will be a high point and the 'City of Winter' will be transformed with artworks using snow, ice, fire and video.

COMMISSIONER VASSILIOU PAYS TRIBUTE TO ABBADO

Commissioner Vassiliou has paid tribute to Italian conductor Claudio Abbado, who died on Monday in Bologna (20 January).

"It was with great sadness that I learnt of the passing of Claudio Abbado: he was a legend at La Scala in Milan, in Vienna, London, Berlin & Chicago," she said, referring to some of the great orchestras he led.

CREATIVE EUROPE IN THE OSCAR RACE

Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou has welcomed the fact that four of the five movies nominated as Best Foreign Language Film for the Oscars are supported by the EU's Creative Europe MEDIA programme. The UK film Philomenia, nominated as Best Picture and for Best Actress, as well as films in the categories of Best Animated Feature Film and Best Documentary Feature, have also received support from the MEDIA sub-programme.
