Kick-start for knowledge triangle can inspire Europe’s talent, says Commissioner Vassiliou

The European Union's new 'knowledge and innovation communities' (KICs) will be in the spotlight at a conference in Barcelona (2-3 June) which aims to strengthen links between higher education, research, business and innovation stakeholders. Androulla Vassiliou, the Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth, will be the keynote speaker on the second day of the event, which is organised by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) and Spanish Presidency of the EU.

Leading policy-makers and academics will discuss the impact of the Lisbon Treaty on the European Union at a two day conference in Brussels on 25-26 May. European Commission President José Manuel Barroso today opened the Global Jean Monnet-European Community Studies Association (ECSA) World Conference, with Androulla Vassiliou, Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth, and Doris Pack, chair of the European Parliament's Committee on Culture and Education. Commissioner Vassiliou presented the 2010 Jean Monnet Prize to Professor Tibor Palánkai, Director of the European Studies and Education Center at Budapest's Corvinus University, for his pioneering role in European integration studies.
EU ministers agree on new education targets

EU education ministers reached almost unanimous agreement today on European education targets aimed at reducing the number of youngsters who leave school before completing their upper secondary education and increasing the proportion of young people with higher or equivalent education.

Film Festival: Vassiliou salutes European winners at Cannes

Three films co-funded by the European Union's MEDIA programme were among those honoured at the closing ceremony of the Cannes Film Festival on 23 May. Des Hommes et des Dieux (Of Gods and Men) by Xavier Beauvois won the Grand Prix, Tournée (On Tour) by Mathieu Amalric received the award for best director, and Juliette Binoche was named as best actress for her role in Abbas Kiarostami's Tuscan love story, Copie Confirme (Certified Copy). The three films were among 21 EU-backed pictures screened at the Festival ( see IP/10/560 ).
