Improving the Palermo-Carini railway line will help cut road congestion and emissions

A project to double a section of railway line between Palermo and the town of Carini (near Palermo Falcone Borcellino airport) in Sicily is expected to help improve levels of service and so encourage more people to travel by train. This scheme is for the doubling of ‘section B’ of the line, running between Notarbartolo and EMS/La Malfa for a length of about 5.3 km.

Bus service overhaul in Dunkirk includes free travel

The city of Dunkirk, in northern France, has transformed its bus services by introducing more frequent lines, changing routes and modernising its railway station. The EU-funded Dk’Plus de mobilité project helped the local authorities introduce free bus travel for all citizens in the Dunkirk conurbation. These changes have led to a significant increase in the use of public transport by local residents and are making the city centre more accessible thanks to a reduction in car use.

New centre brings medical research and treatment together in Zagreb, Croatia

Construction of the Centre of Competence for Translational Medicine (CCTM) will provide Croatia with a world-class facility that specialises in researching and treating common and chronic diseases in children and adolescents. The project extends the Children's Hospital in Srebrnjak, on the outskirts of  Zagreb, through the construction of a 14 523 m2 building. In addition, essential medical and research equipment will be purchased.

Nature flourishes in former coal-mining area of Żabie Doły, Upper Silesia

Birdsong, water lapping against the rushes and wind murmuring in trees. Loosely translated as ‘Frog Pits’, Żabie Doły is an unfettered concert of the nature. Here city residents can escape the urban jungle for family walks, romantic dates, weekend recreation, or picnics. If they are lucky enough, they can see a teal, woodpecker, or even a long-eared owl. Now, thanks to European Union funding, Żabie Doły area has become more visitor-friendly.

Hydrogen: North Sea Region produces fuel for the green transport of the future

Bringing together partners from Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and the UK, the Hydrogen Transport Economy for the North Sea Region 2 project (Hytrec2) aims to stimulate an energy transition and clean economic growth in Europe and create a regional economy based on hydrogen (H2). To this end, it promotes use of electric fuel cell vehicles which run on H2 generated from renewable sources and helps businesses acquire the knowledge to deliver green transport.

Investment in public transport supports low-emissions strategy in Chodzież, Poland

A comprehensive EU-funded project in Chodzież, a town of approximately 18 000 inhabitants in the Wielkopolskie region of north-western Poland, contributed to the successful implementation of a low-emissions strategy in the area. The central pillar of the strategy was a series of investments by local authorities in measures related to public transport, the objective of which was to change residents’ attitudes to urban mobility.

Saving forgotten forest fruit trees in Hungary and Croatia

Two secondary schools in the Pannonia lowland border area of Hungary and Croatia joined forces with local foresters to save and revive a number of fruit tree species native to the region. The ‘Forgotten Forest Fruit Trees’ project helped modernise the process of breeding, planting and cultivating a variety of trees including rare apple and pears, checker trees, sorbs and sweet cherries. As part of the project’s activities, a joint forestry curriculum has been introduced to the Technical School of Virovitica in Croatia and Dráva Völgye school in Barcs, Hungary.

E-schools project to take Croatia’s public education system into the digital age

This project will put in place ICT infrastructure and develop educational software for Croatia’s public primary and secondary schools, to improve teaching, learning and administration.
