Sofia's metro system undergoes new expansion

Public transport in Bulgaria's capital, Sofia, is getting a big boost with the construction of the city's third metro line. The first two phases of its development, which are being co-financed by the EU Operational Programme Transport and Transport Infrastructure for the period 2014-2020, are already underway. In the period 2014-2020, the completion of Phase 1 and 2 of Line 3 is expected to add 12 km of lines and 12 metro stations as well as new 20 new metro trains. Upon completion the Sofia metro network should reach 52 km of lines and 47 stations by 2021. The total EU co-financing for Line 3, Phase 1 and 2 amounts to 454.8 million Euros.

Improved railway connections with port facilities at Gdańsk

Funding from the European Union has supported the modernisation of railway line 226 in northern Poland, which runs from Pruszcz Gdański to Port Północny (or northern port) at Gdańsk and is used for freight operations. The total length of track covered by the investment is 11 kilometres.

New sewage system in Slovakia to reduce pollution and improve quality of life

Upgrades to three waste-water treatment plants, construction of a new sewage system and installation of 47 pumping stations are being carried out in order to improve waste-water collection and treatment in Slovakia’s Trenčín and Nitra regions. The work, which is supported by European Union funding, should ensure that sewage systems in the area comply with EU requirements for urban waste-water treatment.

Radom gets a new bypass with help from EU funds

Co-financing from the EU has contributed to the construction of a bypass around Radom in Poland’s Mazowieckie region. The bypass is 24.65 km long and forms part of a section of the S7 express road currently under construction from Radom to Jędrzejów in the Świętokrzyskie region. When complete, the S7 will run the length of Poland, from Gdańsk on the Baltic coast to Rabka near the border with Slovakia, and will be an important element in the development of the country’s express highway network.

Warsaw’s metro line 2 extended to increase public transport use and reduce pollution

The European Union has invested more than EUR 432 million – out of a total cost of nearly EUR 749 million – in the extension of Warsaw’s metro line 2. As well as giving Poland’s capital six new metro stations, the project includes the installation of technical facilities at the existing Kabaty station, the purchase of 13 new trains and preparatory work for an additional extension to the line.
