EU to promote sustainable fishing at NAFO Annual Meeting

The European Commission will represent the EU at the 34th Annual Meeting of the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organisation (NAFO) to be held from 17 to 21 September in St Petersburg, Russia.

date:  17/09/2012

NAFO members will discuss total allowable catches (TACs) for the main NAFO fish stocks, including Greenland halibut, cod, redfish, shrimps, and thorny skates. The Annual Meeting will also look into ways to step up the protection of Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems, based on the scientific advice and the recommendations of a dedicated Working Group within NAFO. The EU will push for NAFO to continue to step up sustainable management of its fish stocks and protection of the marine ecosystems. Adopting an action plan to implement the recommendations of the NAFO performance review panel would significantly contribute to that.

NAFO is a regional fisheries management organisation which manages most fishery resources of the Northwest Atlantic. It has 12 members from North America, Europe, Asia and the Caribbean, the EU being one of them.
