Issues on the agenda include the social dimension of the EU's reformed Common Fisheries Policy, working conditions in the fisheries sector, and training of fishermen. The social partners also presented their priorities for the coming year.

During a very cordial 90 minute exchange, Commissioner Vella responded to detailed questions from both sides of industry.

Commissioner Vella stressed the Commission's continued commitment to promoting a socially and environmentally sustainable fisheries sector, protecting European workers, as well as promoting decent working conditions.

Today's meeting comes three weeks after the Council reached a political agreement on the Commission's proposal to implement the SSDC-F agreement on the ILO Work in Fishing Convention of 2007. It aims to improve working and living conditions onboard EU fishing vessels.

The social partners also took time to praise the Commission for its work on Ocean Governance and tackling illegal fishing.

Commissioner Vella used the meeting to reiterate his commitment to the social dialogue process and to regularly updating the Sea Fisheries partners.
