Spain and Portugal discuss with the Commission on sardines quotas

In Brussels today, the Director-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries at the European Commission, Mr João Aguiar Machado, is meeting with the Fisheries Secretaries of State of Spain, Mr Andrés Hermida Trastoy and Portugal, Mr José Apolinário.

The aim is to discuss appropriate measures, supported by science, to help the Iberian sardine stock biomass recover from historically low levels. The sardine fishery is of utmost importance for a large number of coastal communities in the two Member States concerned.

In the past years Spain and Portugal have implemented a joint management plan limiting annual catches of sardines to help the stock recover.
