Commissioner Vella discusses ocean governance with NGOs

European Commissioner Karmenu Vella, responsible for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, today met several environmental NGOs to discuss ocean governance, a priority for his mandate. In particular, he was interested in their views on how we can protect our oceans while stimulating blue growth. He also thanked the NGOs for their work in drawing public attention to the well-being of our oceans.

The Commission is committed to improving ocean governance worldwide and to making our seas healthier, whilst securing their resources for the future. But the EU cannot do it alone. That is why the Commission earlier this month launched an international public consultation on ocean governance, to better understand what needs to be done to ensure the sustainable use of marine resources.

In this context, cooperation and exchange with stakeholders, including NGOs, is invaluable: NGOs can help raise public awareness in the EU and globally, identify important issues to be tackled, and outline possible solutions. Today's meeting was part of a broader listening tour that Commissioner Vella will undertake to complement the public consultation and reach a maximum of stakeholders.
