The EU and China join efforts on ocean governance: to protect oceans and deliver blue growth. 2017 is a blue year for the EU and China

Today (on 2 June 2017) Mr Juncker, President of the European Commission, and Mr Li Keqiang, Prime Minister of China unveiled the 2017 EU-China Blue Year logo to mark their commitment to the cooperation between the European Union and China on ocean governance.

Also, in the framework of the EU-China summit, Mr. Joao Aguiar Machado, Director General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries of the European Commission and Mr. Wang Hong, Administrator of State Oceanic Administration of China signed the Joint Press Statement on 2017 EU-China Blue Year. As part of this EU-China Blue Year, a series of activities on ocean matters are taking place. These activities aim to foster closer ties and mutual understanding between European Union and China by bringing together experts from both sides. The European Union and China intend to step up the sharing of knowledge and the exchange of information, views, experiences and good practices by developing joint activities and participating in events such as conferences, meetings, workshops, seminars and study visits. In order to highlight this strengthened cooperation, the activities that are to take place throughout 2017 are implemented as the "EU-China Blue Year". The European Union and China will explore the possibility of reinforced cooperation beyond 2017.
