The fishing sector, NGOs, national administrations, EU institutions and interested members of the public were invited to participate in a seminar and discussion on the status of European fish stocks and the economic situation of European fishing fleets.

Presentations were made by senior experts in fisheries biology concerning the Mediterranean and Black Seas, the northeast Atlantic and nearby waters, and a senior fisheries economist concerning the economic structure of the fishing vessels of the EU.

The meeting was opened by Mr Karmenu Vella, European Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries. The sessions were chaired by Mr João Aguiar Machado, Director-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries.
