New conservation measures agreed for South Indian Ocean

Fisheries in the South Indian Ocean are set to become more sustainable after members of the South Indian Ocean Fisheries Agreement (SIOFA) adopted a series of conservation measures in La Reunion last week. The measures reflect the European Union's push for better managed fisheries resources in the region.

The conservation measures adopted will restrict the expansion of fisheries, regulate bottom fishing activities, protect vulnerable marine ecosystems, and contribute to the fight against illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing. They represent a positive outcome for the EU, which is leading the SIOFA interim secretariat.

SIOFA aims to ensure the long-term conservation and sustainable use of the fishery resources in the region. Its current members include Australia, the Cook Islands, the European Union, France, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Mauritius, and the Seychelles.
