The role of stakeholders in generating this economic advice becomes increasingly important, with new actors becoming part of the processes resulting in the production of this advice. All of this is taking place in a rapidly evolving context, to which the evolution of the fisheries sector over the past decades is itself contributing substantially.

In the light of these challenges, a conference on the economic aspects and needs of fisheries management appears not only relevant but also quite timely, in particular for the Common Fisheries Policy. Such a conference should address the concerns of fisheries administrators, scientists and stakeholders in particular from the fishing industry and competent NGOs.

The Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries is organising such a conference in Malta on 04-05 February 2016 during which we shall endeavour to foster a broad dialogue between users and providers of economic advice.
