TRUST-AI improves trustworthiness of artificial intelligence

The new Pathfinder (FET Proactive) project works on a transparent, reliable and unbiased smart tool for artificial intelligence (AI) utilizable in a wide range of sectors.

The TRUST-AI project develops trustworthy and collaborative (AI) platform, which will be unique because of involving human intelligence in the discovery process. This approach will result in more effective, comprehensible and generalizable solutions.

It will also employ explainable-by-design symbolic models and learning algorithms and adopt a human-centric, guided empirical learning process that integrates cognition.

“Explainable AI is an emergent field, but to ensure no loss of predictive power, many of the proposed approaches just build local explanators on top of powerful black-box models. To change this paradigm and create an equally powerful, yet fully explainable model, we need to be able to learn its structure,” states the TRUST-AI team in the project proposal.

In order to fulfil the objective of the project, TRUST-AI wants to design TRUST (Transparent Reliable and Unbiased Smart Tool), ensure its adequacy to tackle predictive and prescriptive problems, and create an innovation ecosystem around it, whereby academia and companies can further exploit it, independently or in collaboration.

Dr. Gonçalo Figueira, who coordinates the project together with Dr. Pedro Amorim, adds:

“TRUST will leverage our previous work with symbolic learning and human-guided approaches, whereby we discovered explainable solutions for both academic and real-world problems. Now the goal is to expand on these ideas, using cognition models, better human interaction and enhanced learning algorithms, and explore them in different use cases.”

The outputs of the project could be applied everywhere, where human agency or accountability is essential. TRUST-AI focuses mainly on aspects of the use the tool in healthcare, retail, and energy, but also supposes that the system could find its place in banking, insurance, or public administration.

TRUST-AI has started in October and will run for 48 months until September 2024. Among the participants of the project are institutions from Portugal (with INESC TEC being the coordinating institution), Estonia, France, Cyprus, Turkey and the Netherlands.
