What are the rules of gene regulation?

This is an important question for the development of personalized therapy. It is also highly relevant for an efficient production of bio-fuels or in agriculture. FET project MRG-GRammar is on a good trail to find answers.

The way to go in future healthcare is personalized medicine. It is based on the analysis of an individual's genomic biomarkers and their regulation.  FET-Open project MRG Grammar is exploring novel technologies to decipher how exactly the genome is regulated. Promising progress was recently documented by a publication in NATURE Communications.

The project combines synthetic biology with innovative DNA-printing technologies and bioinformatics. This will produce new biological datasets to explore a multitude of regulatory possibilities. New theoretical models based on the data will explain different aspects of regulatory activity. The ultimate goal is to develop algorithms that will decrypt and rewrite the regulatory code of our genome.

Knowing the code of gene regulation will help to reveal the origins of many diseases. It will lead to more precise synthetic biology devices for treatment. And even beyond healthcare applications are envisaged for fuel production or agriculture.

MRG-GRammar is exploring new paths also in other areas. It is one of six FET projects that collaborate with leading international artists.
