FET Open

FET Open gatekeepers
FET Open supports early-stage research on any idea for a new technology. There are no pre-defined themes. It encourages scientists and engineers from multiple disciplines to work together on game-changing science- and technology research, expanding well beyond the traditional technological disciplines.

Overall, FET Open will receive 40% of the total FET budget in Horizon 2020.

Research and innovation actions

FET Open calls for collaborative research and innovation actions that satisfy the FET Open 'gatekeepers', which are:

  • ambitious scientific and technological breakthrough goal,
  • foundational character,
  • high degree of novelty,
  • high-risk,
  • long-term vision,
  • deep synergistic interdisciplinary approach.

FET Open encourages not only proposals with new and promising ideas, but also proposals from new high-potential actors in research and innovation (such as young researchers and high-tech SMEs), who may become the scientific and industrial leaders of the future.

Coordination and support activities

FET Open also calls for coordination and support activities to turn Europe into the best place in the world for responsible collaborative research on future and emerging technologies that will make a difference for society in the decades to come.

The ambition of these actions is to establish European thought-leadership on new and emerging technologies:

  • FET exchange coordinating activities to build up a FET research community
  • FET Take-Up boosting impact and innovation for the portfolio of FET projects

Many scientists point out that the goal of social sciences is not simply to understand how people behave in large groups, but to understand what motivates individuals to behave the way they do. Could this fundamental insight be transformed in a step forward towards the solution of important societal challenges like traffic congestion or the sustainability a fully electrified transportation system? Among others, those are the questions that DATASIM project tried to address. Read more

Do you know what "Maxwell's demon" (MD) is? It is a device where information is converted to energy using feedback from the measurement. The INFERNOS project has successfully shown how an electronic Maxwell's demon does this with the help of nano technology. This achievement could lead towards more energy-efficient future. Read more

The technology behind the design of electric vehicles is ever improving and the EU predicts that these vehicles could be in mass production by 2020. By developing a completely new way of using information from GPS and location data shown by GSM, the EU DATA SIM project simulated the consequences of a massive switch to electric vehicles, and studied the impact on mobility and electricity distribution networks.
