FET Open

FET Open, now part of the EIC Pathfinder pilot, supports the early-stages of the science and technology research and innovation around new ideas towards radically new future technologies. It also funds coordination and support actions for such high-risk forward looking research to prosper in Europe, and FET Innovation Launchpad Actions aiming at turning results from FET-funded projects into genuine societal or economic innovations.

Research and Innovation Actions (RIA))

FET Open calls for collaborative research and innovation actions that satisfy the FET Open 'gatekeepers':

  • Radical vision
  • Breakthrough technological target
  • Ambitious interdisciplinary research

The constantly high number of proposal submissions (more than 3000 since 2014) underlines the fierce competition for funding in the programme. Only truly excellent proposals have a chance to get funding (read the blog post from Timo Hallantie, Head of FET Open Unit: "What it takes to succeed in FET Open").

Coordination and Support Actions (CSA)

FET-Open also facilitates Coordination and Support Actions (CSA). The goal is to create the best possible conditions for responsible collaborative research on FET. This is done by strengthening new FET research communities and by stimulating the take-up of FET research results. The impact of the programme on science and society is also assessed.

FET Innovation Launchpad Actions (CSA)

In addition, FET Open also offers FET Innovation Launchpad grants to fund further innovation related work, i.e. activities which were not scheduled to be funded by the original projects. The funding will be used  to verify and substantiate the innovation potential of ideas arising from FET projects and to support the next steps in bringing them closer to the market.

New EIC Pathfinder pilot:

The newly adopted Enhanced EIC pilot Work Programme 2019-2020 features a pilot Pathfinder for Advance Research that brings together under the same umbrella existing funding schemes such as FET-Open and FET-Proactive.

The EIC Pathfinder pilot offers grants of up to €4 million to promote collaborative, inter-disciplinary research and innovation on science-inspired and radically new future technologies. These grants are for consortia of at least 3 entities from 3 different Members States and Associated Countries.

The EIC Pathfinder Pilot features ‘targeted calls’ based on topics or challenges identified in the Work Programme along with open bottom-up call for proposals. Among the topics featured in the targeted calls are human-centric Artificial Intelligence, implantable autonomous devices and materials and breakthrough zero-emissions energy generation for full decarbonisation, among other future and emerging technological paradigms.

The EIC Pathfinder also provides FET Innovation Launchpad’ grants of up to €100,000 for short individual or collaborative actions and EIC Transition to Innovation Activities grants up to  €2 million to turn promising results from FET-funded projects into genuine technological or societal breakthrough and disruptive innovations.

The EIC Pathfinder pilot has a total budget of around €660 million for 2019-2020.
