Overview   Funding Researchers

What cosmic rays tell us about thunderstorms on Earth

When Prof. Heino Falcke obtained an ERC grant to study and identify the sources of ultra-high energy cosmic rays, back in 2008, he could not imagine that his research would provide an important clue to better understand lightning and thunderclouds much closer to us. His team indeed realized that cosmic rays, originating in outer space and striking the Earth from all directions, can provide a near instantaneous 'picture' of the electric fields in clouds.

Finding the link between language and perception

Language is at the heart of everyday communication. But we don’t all understand language in the same way, with prior information, age and cognitive ability playing a key role. An EU-funded network is studying how people in different ability and age groups perceive language. Its projects are developing tools and training software that could help people with disorders like autism communicate better.

Lymphocytes versus hepatitis B virus: caught in action

For the first time ever, two ERC grantees, Prof. Luca G. Guidotti and Dr Matteo Iannacone, have observed in vivo how specific white blood cells, so-called cytotoxic T lymphocytes, identify, target and attack liver cells that are infected with the hepatitis B virus. To witness these immune cells in action in real time, the two scientists developed advanced, dynamic imaging techniques. An estimated 240 million people are chronically infected with hepatitis B worldwide.

Horizon Magazine - EU Research Framework Programmes, 1984 - 2014

For three decades, the EU Framework Programmes have been funding breakthroughs across Europe. RTD’s Horizon Magazine looks at the people and events that have helped shape European research policy, taking you behind the scenes during the pivotal moments from the last 30 years of research funding. These articles have been brought together into a special Horizon supplement to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Framework Programmes.

FET Open projects: Grant Agreements signed

The Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) Open call had its first cut-off date on 30 September 2014. 24 Research and Innovation Actions (RIA) and 4 Coordination and Support Actions (CSA) proposals have been selected and Grant Agreements have been signed. Six projects started as 1st of June 2015.

Workshop Report on FET Open, organised by Belgian FET National Contact Points (NCP)

On 2 February 2015, the FNRS and FWO FET NCP jointly organized a workshop on FET Open, for members of the Research Administrations of Belgian universities. In the presence of representatives of the European Commission and the Executive Agency for Research (REA), concrete examples and best practices regarding FET Open projects were exchanged. The full report and its annexes are available.

Turning the tables: researching gambling research

We normally think of anthropologists studying ‘exotic’ cultures – ancient tribes that live in faraway places. But how about cultures that are closer to home? Professor Rebecca Cassidy has devoted herself to anthropological studies of European cultures of gambling. In the ‘Gambling in Europe’ (GAMSOC) project – funded by the ERC – Prof. Cassidy and her team have taken this a step further, and conducted an anthropological study of the gambling research community itself.

ERC Consolidator Grants: 372 top researchers funded with €713 million to pursue their best ideas

The European Research Council (ERC) is today announcing the 372 winners of its second Consolidator Grant competition. These excellent mid-career scientists are awarded a total of €713 million, as part of the European Union Research and Innovation programme Horizon 2020. Grants are worth up to €2.75 million each, with an average of €1.91 million per grant. The funding will enable them to consolidate their research teams and to develop their most innovative ideas.

Putting Masaryk on the map with an ERA Chair

The second-largest university in the Czech Republic, Masaryk University in Brno is well known nationally, but less so elsewhere. Professor Petr Dvořák, head of the university’s biology department and vice-rector for research, plans to change that. He hopes to see his university ranked in the top 400 worldwide within a few years. His trump card? The appointment of renowned molecular biologist Professor Mary O’Connell as the university’s first ERA Chair.

Improving prostate cancer diagnosis

The European Union (EU)-funded project PRO-NEST has paved the way towards novel therapies to prevent prostate cancer, which is the third most common cause of cancer for males in Europe. New diagnostic tests and treatments to curb the disease are now in the pipeline, and expected to become available within the next 10 years.

Destination Europe

'Destination Europe' events showcase the vibrant and exciting research and innovation culture in Europe and the opportunities available to researchers, from anywhere in the world, interested in working in Europe.

It is a joint initiative of the European Union and its Member States.

Mining Chinese traditional medicine for cancer treatments

Possible applications of traditional Chinese medicine in cancer treatments have been identified thanks to EU-funded research. The research team targeted some 100 compounds exhibiting potential anticancer activity. These are now being assessed through further research.

Understanding why stress can kill you

An EU-funded project has expanded our understanding of what causes high blood pressure. The results will help to treat people at risk and reduce heart disease – the number one killer in the world.
