EU scientific workshop on bee health and sustainable pollination

Pollination by bees and bee health are important components of sustainable agriculture and food security. The European Commission and EFSA are working together to run a workshop to take stock of past and on-going EU research, and define further needs for possible financing under Horizon 2020.

FET-Open: Second cut-off projects have started

The second cut-off of the Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) Open call on 31 March 2015 resulted in 14 new projects retained for funding, 11 of them for Research and Innovation Actions (RIA) and three for Coordination and Support Actions (CSA).

 
Commission seeks views on research partnership in the Mediterranean

The European Commission has opened a public consultation on a new research and innovation initiative for sustainable food production and improved water management in the Mediterranean area. PRIMA, the Partnership for Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean Area, will involve both EU and non-EU Mediterranean states. It will reinforce international cooperation in research and innovation to address the food and water-related challenges that are critical to the region's sustainable development.

 
Designing the path: a strategic approach to EU agricultural research and innovation

Challenges faced by agriculture and rural areas and the long-term character of research activities call for a strategic approach to research and innovation. European Commission organised a large conference to discuss how such a strategic approach could be implemented. The conference closed a half-year process kicked-off in Milan in June 2015. International partners launch a new International Research Consortium to work together on Animal Health

Animal diseases can cause serious social, economic and environmental damage, impact on animal welfare and in some cases directly threaten human health. These diseases ignore borders. Working together to develop new control methods is essential. 14 organisations committed to jointly invest around EUR 1 billion so far in the next five years through a new international research consortium on animal health. Its launch will be celebrated on 27/01 in Brussels, Charlemagne Press corner at 13:15.

 
Fresh resources from food processing

When oil-seed plants and fish are processed, how can we use the parts not traditionally used in food? How about food ingredients, skincare and pesticides? EU-funded researchers have demonstrated sustainable ways to get the most out of produce. Companies are already building factories and machines to put the results to good use.

Start of a new EU-funded project on solutions for managing the Xyllela spread

Research is urgently needed to strengthen the fight against Xylella fastidiosa, a dangerous plant pathogen worldwide, damaging important crops including fruit trees (olive trees), grapevine and ornamentals. A new EU-funded project just started and funding for another project will be available in the coming months.

 
Tracking the actors of innovation in agriculture

The times when all farmers needed was a fertile plot of land are long gone. Today, they need input from many sources to do their job. Agricultural knowledge and information systems (AKIS) provide farmers with knowledge on agricultural innovations; an EU-funded project took stock to better understand these systems.
