A total of 65 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) from 16 countries have been selected for funding under the latest round of the SME Instrument. The companies will receive a total amount of €113 million to share between their projects to get their innovations faster on the market.
EIT RawMaterials launches its first Accelerator Programme. This is a call for start-ups that consider they already have an innovative offering (at TRL4-6) and see the opportunity in rapidly developing this offering to the exploration, mining, mineral processing, metal, mineral and steel making and recycling industries as well as their suppliers of equipment and tools. EIT InnoEnergy supported start-up CorPower Ocean has recently announced an investment of 8.2M€ from the Swedish Energy Agency to commercialise the technology at full scale. After 18 months of testing and final verification of survival and power generation in Scotland, CorPower has indeed proven that its technology can produce electricity at a competitive cost. Today marks the beginning of the EuroScience Open Forum (ESOF2018) in Toulouse. This is the largest interdisciplinary science meeting in Europe that brings together over 4000 delegates from 80 countries. The European Council confirmed in Brussels yesterday the set-up of an European Innovation Council for market-creating innovation under the next EU long-term budget. The Council also invited the Commission to launch a new pilot initiative on breakthrough innovation within the remaining time of Horizon 2020.

The Commission's 2018 European Innovation Scoreboard published today shows that the EU's innovation performance continues to improve, but further efforts are needed to ensure Europe's global competitiveness. EIT Climate-KIC teamed up with five partners to build partnerships between industries to use production wastes as resources. The prize, run as part of the European Innovation Council (EIC) pilot funded under Horizon 2020, the EU’s research and innovation programme, will award €10 million to an innovative, commercially viable and low-cost solution to launch light satellites. The European Commission will support 79 innovative projects under the European Innovation Council (EIC) pilot to bring their innovations faster onto the market. In total, the projects are to receive €146.173 million under the SME Instrument (Phase 2) and Fast Track to Innovation strands of the EIC pilot. With this funding and extra business acceleration support, innovative companies will be able to finance their close-to-market innovation activities and get on the market faster.
The call for the joint EIT RawMaterials and Veolia incubator programme is now open. U-START's ambition is to accelerate the time to market of innovative concepts through the support of EIT RawMaterials and Veolia in a “co-creation” mode. To be considered for the start-up program, you have to prove a societal and environmental benefit of your concept in the following three to five years. Apply before 22 June 2018.

At the beginning of May, the European Commission announced a proposed budget of €100 billion for the next EU Research and Innovation Framework Programme, called Horizon Europe (2021-2027).
375 proposals have been submitted under the first Horizon 2020 Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) Open call of the European Innovation Council Pilot, that closed on 16 May, for an available budget of 123.7 million EUR.
