Once developed, the method will help the entire EU hotel industry to be more sustainable:

ü  Providing solid evidence to substantiate green claims, providing credibility and trust among consumers looking for sustainable accommodation;

ü  Facilitating fair competition by allowing companies to compare their environmental footprint based on a harmonised method;

ü  Allowing industry to reduce efforts and costs by defining what matters most, effectively improve their environmental performance and tracking and ultimately invest in healthy environment;

To this end, so called Category Rules, a set of detailed instructions, have to be defined. The PEF method is already available for more than 20 product categories, 4 more are currently under development (Environmental Footprint methods (europa.eu)). The Hotel accommodation PEFCR is the latest development initiated and should be ready for 2026.

One of the first key steps of this project is to set up a Technical Secretariat, which will be the governing body to develop the PEFCR for hotels. It will meet regularly to make technical decisions, discuss the progress made and organise hotel industry testing of the draft PEFCR.
