Improved emergency health response by EU poison centres - entry into force of two Commission acts

On 14 November 2020, two delegated Regulations harmonising information requirements for hazardous chemicals enter into force. They will better protect citizens from poisoning accidents and ease submissions by industry. The two Regulations address workability issues by introducing one generic and sector-specific solutions in the CLP Regulation (Regulation 1272/2008/EU).

The CLP Regulation governs the classification, labelling and packaging of chemicals. It also requires suppliers of hazardous chemicals to provide national poison centres information for emergency health responses. To harmonise these information requirements, the Commission added an Annex to the Regulation in 2017 (Annex VIII, Commission Regulation (EU) 2017/542).

Before the compliance date of Annex VIII, EU national authorities and industry stakeholders called for changes because of serious workability concerns. The two Regulations address these concerns by introducing one generic as well as sector-specific solutions for gypsum, ready mixed concrete, cement and petroleum products industry, and bespoke paints.

The two Regulations will allow all industry sectors to comply with Annex VIII and be ready to submit the necessary information as of 1 January 2021 for chemicals of consumer and professional use.
