New case studies on non-energy mineral extractive industry in relation to Natura2000

The new case studies present European best practises for extractive industries operating in the area of the 'natura 2000 network'. They show, in practical terms, how to reconcile biodiversity protection with extractive activities.

date:  26/11/2019

This initiative contributes to implementing action 8 of the Commission's 2017 EU action plan for nature, people and the economy: “identify with Member States and other stakeholders best practices on investment for extractive operations and for land rehabilitation and restoration by non-energy mineral extractive industry, in order to complement the existing guidance on non-energy mineral extractive industry in Natura 2000”.

We have grouped the case studies according to the main type of best practice they illustrate, with a focus on the following topics

  • Partnerships, stakeholder cooperation
  • Impact assessment and mitigation
  • Rehabilitation: habitat restoration and improving species conservation
