The China IPR SME Helpdesk has invited a design patent examiner from the China State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO) to give a detailed introduction and practical tips on how to use design patents and how to correctly apply for a design patent.

Given that design falls under one of the three types of patents protected by patent law in China, and the fact that there is no substantial examination and the examination time is the shortest, the design patent is, or should be, the tool of preference of EU SMEs to protect product designs.

However, design patent application is not simple as one might think.
