Euro-Med conference: Pledge for economic cooperation between EU and Mediterranean countries

The democratic uprisings that occurred in the Mediterranean area and the rightful claims of young people for jobs and a better future in these countries have made it clear that the EU needs to offer greater support to the region, both from a democratic and economic perspective.

date:  16/05/2011

The Euro-Med Conference ended on Thursday, 12 May 2011, with an agreement to focus on strengthening cooperation between countries in this region and a free market between more than 40 states.

European Commission Vice-President Antonio Tajani said an agreement has been reached to create a common market in this region similar to the one existing in the European Union.

He said such a market will go a long towards reducing the number of illegal immigrants, “It is important for North African young people to have African SMEs working in joint ventures with European SMEs and micro enterprises. If we want to fight illegal immigration, it is important to improve the economies, growth and jobs in North African countries,” Mr Tajani said.
