On 27 July the Commission adopted a report on the placing on the market of replica firearms. This report was one of the tasks given to the Commission under Directive 2008/51/EC, amending directive 91/477/EEC on the control of the acquisition and possession of firearms.

The main issue was to determine if it would be feasible and advisable to include replica firearms under the scope of those directives. After careful examination of the idea, it was concluded that it was not appropriate to cover replica firearms in the same way as real firearms given, in particular, the already existing possibility for Member States to take the measures deemed necessary to regulate their placing on the market.
