- Certain trends are reshaping the global industry. The mains ones are 'service innovation for smart industry', 'traceability across the value chain' and the 'internet of things'. These can create new revenue sources, better efficiency and an improved customer experience.
- Smart value chains are replacing traditional ones. They provide more value for companies and consumers. Hyper connectivity is aiding the shift from linear value chains to 'value networks'. Leading to a very different way of reaching and engaging actors in the system.
- Smart value chains come with challenges that require new policies. Examples are data security and privacy, technology standards, and skill gaps and qualification mismatches.
