ERMA is the very first step put in place following the communication 'Critical Raw Materials Resilience – charting a path towards greater security and sustainability', which the European Commission published on 3 September.

Bringing together all relevant stakeholders, ERMA will initially focus on the most pressing needs. The main one is to increase EU resilience in the rare earth and magnet value chains, which is vital to most of the EU industrial ecosystems, such as renewable energy, defence and space. Later, the alliance could expand to address other critical raw material and base metal needs.

ERMA is open to all relevant stakeholders, including industrial actors along the value chain, EU countries and regions, trade unions, civil society, research and technology organisations, investors and NGOs. It is built on the principles of openness, transparency, diversity and inclusiveness, respecting EU competition rules and EU international trade commitments. Its governance framework will be agile and involve all relevant stakeholders.
