Methodology
The metadata on tourism gather information on the overall production processes and on the data quality at both European and national levels. Please consult:
Classifications
Data on tourist accommodation use the statistical classification of economic activities (NACE). They refer to service providers in the area of hotels and similar accommodation (NACE section I, group 55.1), holiday and other short-stay accommodation (55.2) and camping grounds and recreational vehicle parks (55.3).
The regional breakdowns are based on the nomenclature of territorial units for statistics (NUTS). Additional subnational classifications include the so-called type of locality, which is based on the degree of urbanisation as well as coastal and non-coastal areas), as defined in the methodological manual on territorial typologies.
Data on short-stay accommodation offered via online collaborative economy platforms uses the same 2 classifications. Their scope is limited to NACE group 55.2.
Data on tourism trips made by EU residents includes information by main country of destination. This is based on Eurostat's standard code list of geographical entities, which can be consulted in the methodological manual for tourism statistics.
