Domibus 4.2.12 released

We are happy to announce the release of Domibus 4.2.12. Domibus is the sample implementation of an eDelivery Access Point maintained by the European Commission.

The Domibus 4.2.12 release includes a number of improvements and bug fixes, among which:

  • Timer added to load drop wizard queue metrics after application initialization
  • Default value of domibus.metrics.monitor.jms.queues.refresh.period changed to 10
  • Loading issue for large CRLs fixed, avoiding Domibus crashing because out of memory
  • Proxy timeout issue for failed proxy authentication (401 & 407 error codes) fixed

Domibus 4.2.12 is backward compatible with 4.2.x versions. The upgrade is strongly encouraged.

Support for Domibus 4.2.x extended until April 2023

The eDelivery team is happy to announce to the community that the support for Domibus 4.2.x was extended until April 2023. It is nevertheless recommended that users upgrade to Domibus 5.0 in order to guarantee continued support throughout 2023.

eDelivery at SEMIC: enabling data sharing in data spaces

As the 2022 edition of the Semantic Interoperability Conference (SEMIC) ends, the eDelivery team looks back to a successful day of networking and debates on interoperability and data spaces.

On the 6th of December 2022, after having taken place virtually for two years, this year's SEMIC returned in person with the topic "Data Spaces in an Interoperable Europe." The conference, organised by the Interoperability Unit of DIGIT of the European Commission, saw attendees from all over Europe coming together to discuss the implementation of data spaces, with success stories from both the public and the private sector.

This year’s edition of SEMIC far exceeded everyone’s expectations. Throughout the day, over 50 high-calibre speakers from academia, private and public sectors took part in panels and discussions in the fully packed rooms of the Square Meeting Centre in Brussels, to chart the future of interoperability and the implementation of data spaces.

SEMIC attendees crowded the eDelivery booth all day long. Thanks to the newly developed marketing material, visitors learnt about eDelivery’s mission, service offering, and its key role in building data spaces such as the Once-Only Technical System (OOTS) and the European Health Data Space (EHDS).

The pioneering role of eDelivery in implementing data spaces was also at the centre of the dedicated afternoon pitch, where eDelivery Project Officer Bogdan Dumitriu shared the stage with Licinio Kustra Mano, Digital Health Interoperability and Infrastructure Architect for the EHDS. Together they explained eDelivery's contribution to building the European Health Data Space. The pitch highlighted the importance of standardisation for the achievement of EU-wide interoperability. Standards put data space participants on an equal footing, and only through standardised data sharing will future data spaces be interconnected instead of becoming data silos. The value of eDelivery standards has already been widely recognised: both the European Commission and the Member States have already piloted, embraced, and championed eDelivery as a set of open standards for secure data exchange. 

The problem-solution match can be seen in the use of eDelivery in two upcoming data spaces, OOTS and the EHDS. For EHDS, the vital role of eDelivery infrastructure has been highlighted for interconnecting entities participating in the secondary use of health data within the European Health Data Space, HealthData@EU. This digital infrastructure will connect stakeholders such as European Health-Related Agencies (e.g., the European Centre for Disease Control, the European Medicines Agency) and health research institutions, among others. Only a secure, tested, and reliable message exchange protocol can enable data exchange within such a heterogeneous information system: for this reason, eDelivery has been deemed the perfect fit for EHDS. During the pitch, the EHDS representative shared several additional reasons why the building block has been chosen for HealthData@EU: eDelivery ensures a sustainable level and performance regardless of the number and the nature of stakeholders within EHDS, it ensures data integrity and confidentiality in every transmission, and it is flexible and configurable. 

This pitch has been followed by the presentation of the OOTS project. Mr Jonathan Attia spoke about French authorities' commitment to the once-only principle and about the OOTS implementation process in France. He also made a reference to the eDelivery building block, which will be reused to create a virtual secure network.

SEMIC represented an invaluable opportunity to interact in-person with the eDelivery community, and our team was honoured to display the pivotal role eDelivery plays in building data spaces. Participation in SEMIC marks the end of in-person events for our 2022 event calendar. However, our team is working hard behind the scenes to deliver a packed calendar of exciting virtual, hybrid and in-person events throughout 2023. Stay tuned!

It is based on the eDelivery SMP profile, an open technical specification for publishing service metadata within a 4-corner network.

DomiSMLis the sample software provided by the European Commission to implement an eDelivery Service Metadata Locator for an eDelivery party to discover the URLs of other counterparties using eDelivery Access Points and their corresponding metadata. It is based on the eDelivery BDXL profile, an open technical specification for locating Access Points within a network, and on the PEPPOL SML Specification, a technical specification defining a BDXL administration API.

Join us for the eDelivery events in 2023!

As we enter into the new year, the eDelivery team is excited to unveil the calendar of ongoing and future events for 2023.

On 26 January 2023, communication and stakeholder engagement activities will kick in with a webinar organised jointly with the team of the Once-Only Technical System (OOTS). In this tailor-made event, members of the OOTS community will receive hands-on guidance for using eDelivery in their project. During the webinar, the audience will participate in a series of activities guided by the eDelivery team: installing Domibus, starting and configuring it, and exchanging messages with the other Member States participating in the event. As a result, the audience will learn how each Member State can establish one or more eDelivery nodes through which the evidence sharing will take place.

Soon thereafter, the eDelivery team planned a key webinar for the community on exchanging large files. On 7 March 2023, we will welcome everyone interested in exchanging files larger than 2 GB to learn about the use of the Large Message Splitting & Joining profile enhancement of the eDelivery AS4 profile using Domibus, the sample implementation of an eDelivery Access Point maintained by the European Commission. The webinar will explain the rationale of the Large Message Splitting & Joining feature and its use in a live demo. It will also provide information on the current limitations in Domibus' implementation of the feature. The presentation is for both those who are immediately interested in using the Large Message Splitting & Joining feature and those who would like to better understand this capability and to assess its fitness for purpose in a particular scenario. 

Last but not least, the eDelivery team is excited to announce a series of webinars and meetings set up following requests from the community. On 3 May 2023, the eDelivery team will relaunch the Interoperability Forum. The Forum represents an invaluable occasion for software developers and service providers to share their knowledge, experiences and expectations in regards to eDelivery Building Block. We are very happy to share that after more than two years this forum is going to resume. Among the topics to be discussed will be the upcoming cryptography-related changes in the new version of eDelivery AS4 profile. Similarly, on 11 May 2023,  the Informal Cooperation Network for eDelivery (ICN) will return for the first edition of the year. The meeting is a platform for Member States' representatives involved in the setting up of national eDelivery infrastructures to actively contribute to the adoption of eDelivery at national and EU levels. Following requests from the participants, the eDelivery team is happy to announce that this year’s edition will return in a hybrid format so that those interested can join on site in Brussels! Soon after,  The webinar on dynamic discovery using SMP & SML will take place on 8 June 2023. The webinar will cover the presentation of the SML and SMP components, along with the illustration of the dynamic discovery process in a 4-corner network. During the fall of 2023, the team will organise an extensive webinar to present the value proposition of eDelivery to a business audience, including best practices and success stories (on 28 September 2023), and the second ICN meeting of the year (on 12 October 2023, tentative date).

In case you missed any of our activities in the past few months, read below a short summary on what has happened

The eDelivery team kicked off the fall engagement activities with two webinars on Domibus 5.0. On 18 October 2022, the eDelivery community participated in the webinar “new features of Domibus 5.0”.  There, during the most attended eDelivery webinar to date, representatives from eDelivery guided users through the changes and additions in the latest version of the Domibus product. Among those, they introduced the improved overall performance, UI Domibus Admin Console improvements, and the updates in the new Domibus 5.0 plugins. At the end of the webinar, the eDelivery team recommended that the audience install or upgrade Domibus as soon as possible, as the Domibus 4.2 version is set to go out of support at the end of April 2023.

Similarly, on 22 November 2022, members of the eDelivery community came together for the webinar on “Domibus 5.0 plugins”. On the occasion, eDelivery representatives explained how to use the three standard Domibus plugins – the web service plugin, the JMS plugin, and the file system plugin – for sending and receiving messages. Furthermore, attendees learned about the eDelivery plugin cookbook and the available message filters, gaining a better understanding of the available options to integrate Domibus into their system architecture.

The winter calendar progressed to the most important event of the eDelivery engagement strategy of 2022. On the 6 December 2023, the eDelivery team took part in the Conference of SEMIC action: Promoting Semantic Interoperability amongst the EU Member States. The conference, organized by the Interoperability Unit of DIGIT of the European Commission, saw attendees from all over Europe coming together to discuss the implementation of data spaces, with success stories from both the public and the private sector. The eDelivery team was among a selected number of exhibitors allowed to have their on-site booth. Thanks to the newly developed marketing material, visitors to the eDelivery booth learned about eDelivery’s mission, service offering, and its key role in building data spaces such as the Once-Only Technical System (OOTS) and the European Health Data Space (EHDS). The pioneering role of eDelivery in implementing data spaces was also at the centre of the dedicated afternoon pitch. Bogdan Dumitriu, the project officer in charge of eDelivery, shared the stage with Licinio Kustra Mano, Digital Health Interoperability and Infrastructure Architect for the EHDS. Together they displayed eDelivery's essential contribution to building the future European Health Data Space.

After its participation in Europe’s largest conference on interoperability, the eDelivery team closed the year with a series of online webinars for different projects (that you can read more about here). In the beginning of December 2022, two meetings were dedicated to the electronic freight transport information (eFTI) – a workshop on the implementation of the eFTI architecture on 2 December 2022 and the Technical Fridays event of the Digital Transport and Logistics Forum (DTLF)* on 9 December 2022. On 13 December 2022, eDelivery representatives took part in an online webinar aimed at the OOTS community, the “OOTS Implementers café” where the eDelivery team illustrated how the Once-Only Technical System will reuse eDelivery access points to create a virtual secure network. Similarly, on 14 December 2022, the eDelivery team took part in a webinar with the European Health Data Space team. There, they presented eDelivery and how it will fit the EHDS architecture. The webinar also included a demonstration on how to send an AS4 message.

*eFTI is a set of data elements processed electronically for the purpose of exchanging regulatory information among economic operators (mainly companies involved in freight transport and logistics) and between operators and competent authorities. The implementation of eFTI is monitored by the Digital Transport and Logistics Forum (DTLF) – an expert group of the European Commission that brings together public and private stakeholders from various transport and logistics communities. DTLF supports the European Commission in promoting the digital transformation of the transport and logistics sector. In these events, the team presented eDelivery as a potential message exchange solution within the eFTI exchange environment.

eDelivery sample software: recent updates and the roadmap for 2023

Throughout 2022, the eDelivery team has been working hard to ensure the best quality of software and service to the eDelivery user community, and even more ambitious goals are set for 2023.

Following the release of Domibus 5.0 in June 2022, the 5.0.1, 5.0.2 and 5.0.3 patches of Domibus were released in September 2022, November 2022 and January 2023, respectively. Each of the patches includes a number of improvements and bug fixes and they are all backwards compatible with Domibus 5.0. In December 2022, Domibus 4.2.12 was released and support for the 4.2 product line was extended until April 2023. In the meantime, users are strongly encouraged to upgrade to Domibus 5.0.x to avoid using an unsupported version after that date. Domibus is an open-source sample implementation of the eDelivery AS4 Profile, maintained and supported by the European Commission.

DomiSML 4.2, the European Commission’s sample implementation of a Service Metadata Locator, was published in October 2022. DomiSML is an eDelivery software component central to a messaging infrastructure that enables dynamic discovery through DNS lookups. Access Points can perform such lookups to discover the location where they can find the service metadata (e.g., the URL, certificate and capabilities) of the destination Access Point for a particular message. The DNS entries required for this model to work are created by the DomiSML component according to a defined technical specification. DomiSML 4.2 replaces 4.1.1. In the new version the libraries were upgraded to mitigate security threats, support for the latest versions of Tomcat and MySQL was added, and likewise for SpringBoot to facilitate integration in the Docker ecosystem.

eDelivery’s roadmap for 2023 includes a major update of the eDelivery AS4 profile and several updates of all three major eDelivery software products Domibus, DomiSML and DomiSMP.

The new eDelivery AS4 profile will be released tentatively in mid-2023. In the new eDelivery AS4 profile, among others, the set of cryptographic primitives will be updated with the aim to switch from the RSA to the elliptic curve family of algorithms, to support perfect forward secrecy for the eDelivery encryption via ECDH-ES with certificate updates via ebCore Agreement Update, and to support publishing metadata in the SMP in such a way as to allow a gradual migration to the new cryptography​. Support will also be added for an Access Point to be able to send updates of its URL and/or certificate via ebCore Agreement Update.

In the first quarter of 2023, Domibus 5.1 will be released (the Release Candidate is planned for February 2023 and the Final Release for March 2023). Domibus 5.1 will include support for different security algorithm configurations and multiple types of private keys, a retry strategy with increasing delay between attempts as well as the possibility to configure retention policy for metadata separately than the one for data. Domibus 5.1 will also allow batch (re)sending of messages from the admin console and support the possibility for the receiving party of a message to use the same access point as the sending party by allowing a received message to have the same message ID as a sent one.

Domibus 6.0 RC is planned for October 2023, with the Final Release for December 2023. The new version of the software will support the latest long-term supported Java, Tomcat, WildFly and WebLogic versions. It will support sending updates of an Access Point's URL and/or certificate to multiple other Access Points via service messages, and allow the sending Access Point to track the status of the responses received from other Access Points and apply changes to its local configuration following those responses. Domibus 6.0 will support the latest signing and encryption algorithms defined in the updated eDelivery AS4 profile.

In the second half of 2023, the eDelivery team will also work on preparing the release of DomiSML 4.3, with the final release scheduled in early 2024. The new version will ensure support for the latest versions of Tomcat and MySQL. The libraries will be upgraded to the latest versions to mitigate security threats. 

A new version of the Service Metadata Publisher, DomiSMP 5.0, is planned for release in mid-2023. DomiSMP enables the process of dynamic discovery of service metadata information by storing, exchanging and performing lookups of the service metadata (e.g., the URL, certificate and capabilities) of participants in an eDelivery messaging infrastructure. The new version will ensure support for publishing multiple metadata documents for a participant (such as OASIS SMP 1.0 and OASIS SMP 2.0), SpringBoot and different security algorithms configurations. The version will also support the latest Java and platform versions.

Finally, the conformance testing platform will be upgraded to a new version based on the Interoperability Test Bed platform in the first quarter of 2023.

Digital Signature Service becomes part of Maven Central

Digital Signature Service (DSS) is an open-source library for electronic signature creation and validation. In November 2022, DSS became available on Maven Central for free usage!

Digital Signature Service is an open-source software library that supports the creation and verification of interoperable and secure electronic signatures in line with European legislation. In particular, DSS aims to follow the eIDAS Regulation and related standards closely. In a nutshell, DSS makes the creation of secure electronic signatures easy and simple for users. 

During the organisational changes and the transition to Digital Europe Programme (DIGITAL), that is now completed, eSignature kept focusing on bringing digital technology to businesses, citizens and public administrations efficiently. In this context, two new versions (DSS 5.10.2 and DSS 5.11.1) were released in November 2022 to the most extensive repository of Java projects, becoming a part of Maven Central family, and are now available for usage. The new DSS versions were updated with new features and to fix on vulnerable dependencies and bugs. These versions will help you to simplify the integration of DSS into your project and will provide a stable connection to DSS artifacts at the same time. 

The eSignature team invites you to upgrade the library and share your feedback to continue improve our services. The details about the integration are available on the GitHub official repository of DSS.

EUPLe using eDelivery in a Peppol Logistics Environment: a success story from Portugal

In June 2022, the eDelivery team attended the final presentation of EUPLe, an action co-financed by the Connecting Europe Facility of the European Union which piloted how UBL and eDelivery can be enabled in a Peppol Logistics Environment. The objectives of the project were to digitise the authorisation process for accessing certain areas of Portuguese sea ports as well as the exchange of documents among actors in the logistics sector with the help of eDelivery.

In this event, international experts presented their eDelivery-based solution for establishing digital interoperability between seaport ecosystems and the Attribute Provider in Portugal, used to obtain information regarding the professional role(s) of a person being authorised entry in the port. They also presented a working implementation of both UBL and eDelivery in a Peppol Logistics Environment where the transport and logistics chain were adapted to use eDelivery in order to exchange business documents.

The project successfully reused the same eDelivery technology to address digitisation needs in the two different domains: transport and logistics and digital identification. Using the same, interoperable transport infrastructure different documents are exchanged securely and reliably in both areas. The beneficiaries deployed five eDelivery Access Points and one Service Metadata Publisher (DomiSMP) to allow actors in the workflow to dynamically discover the capabilities of the other ones’ Access Points. This action contributed to the digitalisation of logistics sector that is still heavily based on paper and data retyping along established transport and logistics chains.

The first component of the project – digital identification – deploys eDelivery to obtain the roles of an identified person from multiple sources. The authentication is possible through eWallet – the mobile application of the National Digital Wallet that allows individuals save and view a variety of their identification cards at any time. eWallet allows for storing a number of identification documents, among which citizen cards, driving licenses, public servant Health Cards, military IDs, car documents, student cards and employee cards. The identity retrieved from the eWallet is combined with attributes obtained via the eDelivery channel at the JUL (Janela Única Logística, Logistics Single Window) to provide the full information required for the authorisation procedure.

JUL is the national project in Portugal that involves all 23 Portuguese seaports and a digital ecosystem which allows all involved stakeholders to collaborate, align processes in real-time and synchronise operations. The project involves a wide range of stakeholders, including Portuguese authorities responsible for cargo and transport procedures, associations and organisations related to logistics networks and technological partners.

The second component of the project involved three European start-ups creating a digital Logistics Environment following the OpenPeppol concept to allow exchanging documents among actors in the logistics sector with the help of eDelivery. MITMYNID from Portugal, Clearview Trade from Denmark and DBE Core from Finland, high-tech companies specialised in logistics processes, digital documents and blockchain, adapted their platforms to take advantage of the eDelivery infrastructure and create a reliable and resilient interoperability environment.

The system developed within the scope of the project adopted the eDelivery Building Block as an interoperability infrastructure within the collaborative ecosystem of Portuguese ports, the Portuguese National Identification system and private providers of digital services for Logistics. The EUPLe network decided to use Domibus – the sample implementation of an eDelivery Access Point provided by the European Commission – to establish their eDelivery Access Points. As the outcome of the project, a digital Unique Port Card (Cartão Único Portuário) was developed in the National Digital Wallet for validation of citizen’s identification in harbours and for authorized access to certain harbours’ premises. The EUPLe network allows for connecting the logistics service providers with buyers and suppliers, financial institutions, and the general public (citizens).

The interoperability across the action was made possible thanks to deployment of a combination of eDelivery components (DomiSMP, DomiSML and Connectors, the five eDelivery Access Points in a four-corner model, the usage of eDelivery for eFTI National Access Points) and a blockchain component.

With the achieved results of this European project, new products and services are provided by the partners. MITMYNID improved the hcAP general connector which can simplify the connection between the Access Point and the backend systems, and DBE Core created one service to allow the connection between AS4 infrastructures and the blockchain based system. The Portuguese eDelivery component was established through the Public Administration Interoperability Platform (iAP).

The greatest achievement of the project is the ability to have economic operators exchanging data and documents with business partners and authorities on the private eFTI platforms, following the OpenPeppol concept, supporting the eFTI Regulation and using eDelivery.

How can you use the eDelivery building block in your own project?

Domibus is the sample software provided by the European Commission to implement an eDelivery AS4 Access Point for the interoperable, secure and reliable exchange of data. It is based on the eDelivery AS4 profile, an open technical specification for the secure, web-based, payload-agnostic exchange of data or documents.

DomiSMP is the sample software provided by the European Commission to implement an eDelivery Service Metadata Publisher (SMP) for publishing and retrieving data necessary for an eDelivery party to dynamically configure its system for message exchange with counterparties using eDelivery. It is based on the eDelivery SMP profile, an open technical specification for publishing service metadata within a 4-corner network.

DomiSML is the sample software provided by the European Commission to implement an eDelivery Service Metadata Locator (SML) for an eDelivery party to discover the URLs of other counterparties using eDelivery Access Points and their corresponding metadata. It is based on the eDelivery BDXL profile, an open technical specification for locating Access Points within a network.

Come visit the eDelivery booth at SEMIC!

eDelivery is gearing up to participate in Europe's largest conference on interoperability!

On the 6th of December at the Square Meeting Centre in Brussels, the eDelivery team will be at the Conference of SEMIC action: Promoting Semantic Interoperability amongst the EU Member States. After taking place virtually for two years, this year's SEMIC will return in person with the topic "Data Spaces in an Interoperable Europe." The conference, organized by the Interoperability Unit of DIGIT of the European Commission, will see attendees from all over Europe coming together to discuss the implementation of data spaces, with success stories from both the public and the private sector.

The eDelivery team will be among a selected number of exhibitors in the field of semantics, interoperability, and tech allowed to have their on-site booth. Visitors to the eDelivery stand will be able to see first-hand the team's brand-new promotional material. Moreover, they will learn about eDelivery's crucial contribution to creating current and future data spaces, including the Once-Only Technical System and the European Health Data Space (HealthData@EU)

At SEMIC, eDelivery representatives will also have the privilege to join many high-caliber speakers debating the future of interoperability. After opening remarks from the European Commissioner for Budget and Administration Johannes Hahn, and high-profile interventions from representatives from industry representatives from Atos and Amazon, among others, the eDelivery team will have its dedicated pitch. During the afternoon, eDelivery Project Officer Bogdan Dumitriu will share the stage with Licinio Kustra Mano, Digital Health Interoperability and Infrastructure Architect for the European Health Data Space. Together they will showcase eDelivery success story in building the European Health Data Space (HealthData@EU) and the role of eDelivery access points.
