EIT team reaches finals of anti-poverty business competition

Brussels, 25 April - A team representing the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) will compete in the final of one of the world's leading business competitions in New York City on 26 April. The five-strong team, who will present a project aimed at boosting the use of solar power in Africa, received a "good luck" message from EU Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth Commissioner, Androulla Vassiliou, on the eve of their participation in the anti-poverty HULT Global Case Challenge.

Higher education reform key for jobs and growth, Bologna Process Ministers are told

Brussels, 25 April 2012 – European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth Androulla Vassiliou has told Member States that they need to urgently modernise their higher education systems and remove barriers to a fully functioning European Higher Education Area (EHEA) in response to the crisis and rising youth unemployment. Speaking ahead of the two-yearly meeting of higher education ministers in Bucharest (Romania), in the framework of the Bologna Process, Commissioner Vassiliou underlined that action is essential to help drive jobs and growth in Europe.

Brussels, 17 April 2012 - The European Commission today launches the “We Mean Business” campaign, which aims to encourage companies to create more trainee placements to boost young people's skills and employability. At the same time, traineeships can help young people make a smooth transition from education and training to a first good job.

Elle visitera la maison historique et le nouveau musée attenant et déposera ensuite une gerbe sur sa tombe dans l'église St Quentin.

Brussels, 18 April - The European Union and China are taking their co-operation to a new level with the launch of a "people-to-people" dialogue covering education, culture, youth, research and multilingualism. Androulla Vassiliou and Liu Yandong, Chinese State Councillor, today signed a joint declaration in which the EU and China commit to strengthening contacts and exchanges between their peoples in order to deepen understanding and trust.

Arts and culture can build bridges with Roma, says Commissioner Vassiliou

The role of arts and culture in encouraging Roma inclusion will be the focus of a conference organised by the European Commission in Brussels on 18 April. A concert organised by the Yehudi Menuhin International Foundation, featuring acclaimed Roma singer Ida Kelarova and Roma children, will take place in the evening.

Winners of EU Prize for Literature at the London Book Fair

Three of the winners of last year's prize will be at the London Book Fair on 18 April. Andrej Nikolaidis (Montenegro) and Inga Zolude (Latvia) will visit the Pen Literary Café and UK winner Adam Foulds will later join them to take part in a debate organised with 'Literature across Frontiers', an initiative promoting literary exchange, translation and policy debate around the topic of literature.
