Helping European workers through adult learning

Androulla Vassiliou launches the implementation phase of the European Agenda for Adult Learning at an event in Brussels on 27-28 February. The Agenda was formally adopted by the Council in November 2011 and focuses on providing second-chance opportunities for low qualified adults by strengthening their basic skills, such as literacy, numeracy and computer literacy.

Education report warns of growing teacher shortages

Brussels, 10 February 2012 – Several EU countries, including Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, the Netherlands, Austria and Belgium, may face serious teacher shortages in the future, according to a new report published by the European Commission. The report, entitled 'Key Data on Education in Europe 2012', was presented to EU Education Ministers at their meeting in Brussels this morning.
EU risks missing post-compulsory education targets

The European Union is at risk of missing its 2020 targets to reduce the number of early-school leavers and increase the share of students completing tertiary education, according to a report which will be discussed by Ministers at the Education, Youth, Culture and Sport (EYCS) Council on Friday (10 February).
Winners announced in EU Young Translators' Contest

Brussels, 3 February 2012 – The names of the 27 winners of the European Commission’s annual Young Translators' Contest, known as ‘Juvenes Translatores’, are published today (see full list below). A winner for each EU country was selected from among more than 3 000 secondary school pupils in total who sat the contest in November 2011.

Exhibition for EU Contemporary Architecture Prize / Mies van der Rohe Award

A touring exhibition featuring models of the 45 buildings shortlisted for the EU Prize for Contemporary Architecture/ Mies van der Rohe Award opens tomorrow in Paris. The exhibition at the Cité de l'architecture et du patrimoine is open to the public and runs to 4 March.

Brussels, 01 February 2012 – The 2012 EU-China Year of Intercultural Dialogue will be officially launched today by Androulla Vassiliou and Cai Wu, Minister of Culture of the People’s Republic of China. The Year will see a large number of events and projects hosted by EU Member States and China, with the aim of strengthening intercultural dialogue and mutual understanding through cultural exchanges and people-to-people contacts.

European films 'The Artist' and 'The Iron Lady' scoop 7 Oscars

Brussels 27 February 2012 – European Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou has welcomed the major success of European films at last night's 84th Academy Awards ceremony in Hollywood. 'The Artist' was crowned with five Oscars and 'The Iron Lady' with two. This year, nine nominated films received support from the European Union's MEDIA programme for cinema.
