The EESC has been organising a series of activities to support the objectives of the 2010 European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion.

  • In May, it held its major President’s Biennial conference on ‘Education to combat Social Exclusion’ in Florence, which brought together civil society organisations to debate the key role played by different educational approaches. A copy of the conference proposals was handed in Florence to the EC President.
  • Based on the debate on the poverty indicators held by the EESC Standing Group for the Year, a statement of the EESC expectations was sent by the EESC President to the European Council of Ministers for its meeting in June.
  • Two major events are planned for November in Brussels: a ‘people’s university’ with ATD Fourth World to work with individuals experiencing poverty (8th November), and a final conference with the Coalition of European NGOs to consider the impact of the Year and the way forward (22nd November).
  • The work undertaken by the EESC on poverty and social exclusion over the past few years will be highlighted together with specific themes dealt with during the year in an end of year report.
