Androulla Vassiliou describes a typical week in her agenda
Monday 7 May
Start of a very busy week. I am feeling back on good form after my bout of illness in April [pneumonia]. Two-hour meeting this morning with my cabinet and senior staff from ‘DG EAC’ [Directorate-General for Education & Culture, EC equivalent to a Government Ministry] to prepare for the EYCS [Education, Youth, Culture, and Sport] Ministerial Council on Thursday and Friday. It's going to be the 3164th! Every debate and speech requires assiduous preparation – and the stakes are high.
Brussels, 25 May – The European panel in charge of monitoring preparations by the 2013 European Capitals of Culture, Marseille (France) and Košice (Slovakia), has recommended that both should receive the Melina Mercouri Prize in recognition of the quality of their preparations.
Nicosia/Brussels, 25 May – The role of European newspapers in helping to shape democratic and tolerant societies is as important today as in the era of Napoleon Bonaparte, who famously declared that "four hostile newspapers were to be feared more than a thousand bayonets".
General Assembly of ENPA (The European Newspaper Publishers' Association). Nicosia (Cyprus), 25 May 2012

Brussels, 16 May 2012 - Eighteen films supported by the European Commission's MEDIA programme are in the Cannes Film Festival's 'Official Selection' this year, of which seven are in competition for the Palme d’Or, notably "Amour" by Michael Haneke, "The Angel's Share" by Ken Loach and "Jagten" (The Hunt) by Thomas Vinterberg. During the Festival, Androulla Vassiliou will award the first 'Prix MEDIA' to Iranian film-maker Asghar Farhadi and will also discuss the Commission's proposed new 'Creative Europe' programme, which includes MEDIA, with film directors and professionals.

At the age of 25 Picasso was at the height of his "blue period";
at about the same age, Paul McCartney wrote the song "Yesterday";
Albert Einstein worked on the theory of relativity at his quarter of a century birthday;
and, in its 25th year of existence, the Erasmus Programmereached record levels of participation with over 230,000 students.
I am particularly happy that the Council supports the Commission's proposal to bring together the current funding programmes in the cultural and creative sector.
