EU leaders have reiterated their confidence in a modernised Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), and recognized the important contribution of farming and rural areas to the EU economy.
If confirmed by the European Parliament, this agreement paves the way to the final phase of the CAP reform negotiations.

Am 32. Welternährungstag, der am 16 Oktober begangen wird, sind die Nachrichten zur Hungerbekämpfung gemischt.
 
Auf der einen Seite zeigen jüngste Zahlen, dass in den letzten zwei Jahrzehnten Fortschritte im Kampf gegen den Hunger erzielt wurden. 1990 litten weltweit 1 Milliarden Menschen unter Hunger. Heute sind noch 868 Millionen unterernährt, und mit einem zusätzlichen Kraftakt können wir das erste Millennium-Entwicklungsziel, bis 2015 den Anteil der Hungernden zu halbieren – noch erreichen.
