EU funding has made possible the modernisation, renovation and extension of the Ludwik Rydygier provincial integrated hospital in Toruń, seat of government of Poland’s Kujawsko-Pomorskie region. The first phase of the project involves the construction of a centralised complex to house departments currently located at four different sites.
Centralised complex built for Toruń’s Ludwik Rydygier hospital
- 18 February 2019
Thanks to this Cohesion Policy investment, the inhabitants of Toruń will wait less time for treatment and exams. They will access quality health services in a single modern hospital complex. This is a great project that shows what Cohesion Policy is about: improving the lives of the people.
The four sections of the hospital to be relocated are the psychiatric hospital, the hospital for infectious diseases, the diagnostic imaging department and the invasive cardiology laboratory. There are plans to build a helipad to serve the complex.
With the completion of the first phase, 883 beds will be transferred from existing sites to the centralised facility, which will have a total capacity of 1 054 beds and contain 59 specialist clinics. The launch of the second phase is subject to availability of the necessary financing.
A key healthcare facility
With its main building situated in the north-west of Toruń, the Ludwik Rydygier hospital is the city’s largest public hospital. Opened in 1963, it consists of the specialist hospital for children and adults (which houses the Kujawsko-Pomorskie region’s only breast milk bank), the regional dentistry centre, the psychiatric hospital, the hospital for observation and infectious diseases and the regional ambulance station.
At present, the hospital is spread over six sites in various parts of the city. It treats more than 95 000 patients a year at its 41 departments, which include the clinics of the Collegium Medicum of Nicolaus Copernicus University.
The Collegium Medicum clinics cover maxillofacial (jaw and face) surgery, nephrology (treatment of kidney conditions), diabetology (treatment of diabetes), internal diseases, obstetrics (care during pregnancy and childbirth), women's diseases, gynaecological oncology (treatment of cancers of women's reproductive organs) and adolescent and geriatric psychiatry.
Modernised services
The dispersal of the departments has given rise to a need for greater centralisation. Moreover, creation of a modern public healthcare unit is necessary given that the current facilities no longer meet requirements, neither in terms of capacity nor regarding technical condition and quality.
Day surgery – where patients are admitted and discharged on the same day – is not possible at the hospital, which also lacks an integrated diagnostic and intervention centre. Patients thus have to travel to other places for many types of specialist examination or treatment.
Centralisation of services within a fully equipped facility providing comprehensive care will allow for the introduction of day surgery and the establishment of a rehabilitation department, and optimise the functioning of existing departments. This will significantly increase the quality and speed of treatment, particularly in cases where lives are at risk.
