EU-backed fund supports urban development in Andalusia

The European Investment Bank (EIB) and the Regional Government of Andalusia, in southern Spain, have used EU funding to create the Andalusian Urban Development Fund. This is a fund of funds – a portfolio of various different types of fund – aimed at fostering urban development in the region. Resources are channelled to final recipients via two financial intermediaries selected by the EIB through a call for expressions of interest: Arcano Fondo de Desarrollo Urbano and GED Andalucía Urbano.

Croatia ensures better monitoring of weather and climate with modernised meteorological network

The EU-funded METMONIC project aims to modernise Croatia’s national meteorological network with the acquisition of 450 instruments, including automatic weather stations, weather buoys and remote measurement systems such as meteorological radars. This will improve measurements taken from close to the earth’s surface and the upper atmosphere. The project will allow for more accurate predictions of extreme weather, and better understanding of climate change, which should contribute to better policies to help protect society from its effects.

New section of expressway built in Poland's Mazovia province

EU funding has contributed to the construction of a 22 km section of the S7 expressway from the municipality of Orońsko in Mazovia province, central Poland, to the border with Świętokrzyskie province to the south. The road forms part of the Trans-European Transport Network's Baltic-Adriatic corridor and also forms a section of European route E77, which runs from Kaliningrad to Budapest via Gdańsk, Warsaw and Kraków.

Strengthening the spine of Poland’s modern rail network

Phase two of an EU-funded project will complete the renovation of sections of a vitally important rail line connecting the Polish capital of Warsaw with the southern city of Kraków. The project is crucial to ensuring that Poland has a modern rail system, ensuring that more people and goods are transported efficiently and at greater speed along the network.

Renovation will modernise section of Polish rail network in Mazowieckie

Phase two of an EU-funded project will complete the renovation of 66 km of the network in Poland’s Mazowieckie region to remove bottlenecks, increase the frequency of trains and make rail travel more appealing to commuters and freight transporters.

New sewage system in Slovakia to reduce pollution and improve quality of life

Upgrades to three waste-water treatment plants, construction of a new sewage system and installation of 47 pumping stations are being carried out in order to improve waste-water collection and treatment in Slovakia’s Trenčín and Nitra regions. The work, which is supported by European Union funding, should ensure that sewage systems in the area comply with EU requirements for urban waste-water treatment.

Second phase of development implemented for Hungary’s M85 and M86 motorways

Funding from the EU has made it possible to carry out the second phase of the development of three sections of Hungary’s M85 and M86 motorways. The roads link the cities of Szombathely and Győr in the Western Transdanubia region and also create a bypass around the town of Csorna.

Warsaw’s metro line 2 extended to increase public transport use and reduce pollution

The European Union has invested more than EUR 432 million – out of a total cost of nearly EUR 749 million – in the extension of Warsaw’s metro line 2. As well as giving Poland’s capital six new metro stations, the project includes the installation of technical facilities at the existing Kabaty station, the purchase of 13 new trains and preparatory work for an additional extension to the line.

Flood protection measures for the River Oder in southern Poland

The Racibórz Dolny flood protection reservoir – which is being built with support from European Union co-financing – aims to provide protection from flooding by the River Oder for 1.3 million inhabitants in the most important settlements in the Śląskie, Dolnośląskie and Opolskie regions of southern and south-western Poland. The reservoir has a surface area of 24 km² and a storage capacity of 185 million m³.

Fifth phase of Waste Water Master Plan for Warsaw gets under way

Phase five of a large investment programme entitled ‘Waste Water Master Plan for Warsaw’ is underway. It is co-financed by the European Union and focuses on water supply and waste-water management. This phase, which is being implemented in the city of Warsaw and the municipalities of Pruszków and Serock, includes development of a central sewage network management system.
